Thread ?

I don't know if anyone else has noticed it or not, but I have. When I stop in to the site for a few minutes during the day and check a few threads and then come back later to do some more extensive reading, I've noticed that any of the threads that I hadn't actually gone into show as being read. Is there any way to change this so that if I haven't actually "entered" a thread that it still shows as having new posts?

Im actually not entirely sure, ill ask around and try and see what is going on. What browser are you using? It doesnt happen to me.

MontanaXJer 05-14-2008 08:10 PM

IE7 on a Vista. I visit a few other bulletin boards and this is the only one that it occurs on.
:dunno:

Odd, I will look into it more and ask around.

Thanks. Gotta give you credit, you're very fast when it comes to replying to people's questions.

Just to give you an example, I just went into the Introductions part of the forum for the first time today, and this is what I see:

http://i26.tinypic.com/1199q48.jpg

If you'll notice, the third thread down (Lurker) was posted in today, yet it shows as being read by me.

I see this type of thing in every portion of the forum. I have no idea why.

Any help you guys can give is much appreciated.

Kyle 05-14-2008 08:26 PM

Did you visit the forum after 9:50AM today?

MontanaXJer 05-14-2008 08:41 PM

Sure did. I don't remember the exact time, but probably around 1pm mountain time. I did not go into the Intro part at all though.

Kyle 05-14-2008 08:43 PM

Well that is probably the reasoning, but it does not do that for me. Again I will look into it and see what we can do.

MontanaXJer 05-14-2008 08:49 PM

The issue I have with it is if there is a thread that I'm following, at first glance it shows as having no new posts. If you (or anyone else) can figure it out, then great.

MontanaXJer 05-15-2008 05:05 PM

Here is another example. I just logged onto the site for the FIRST time today. As you can see, there are numerous thread titles that show as being posted in today, yet they show as not having any new posts.

No problem. Just showing you what I'm seeing on my end.

Montana, We have the board setup to show forum reads as part of the Inactivity/Cookie setup. So after your session has expired or you have reached 900 seconds of inactivity all threads are cleared as read. Other forums might be setup differently, but we usually do all of ours this way.

How much of an incovenience do you feel that this is? It's been this way since we started this board almost a year ago and honestly this is the first complaint we've heard about it.

I would say it's more of a minor irritation rather than a true complaint. I was just trying to figure out why this was happening with this board when it hadn't happened with other boards.

I can live with it, just means I have to actively search out a thread I might be following and pay attention to the last time it was posted in to see if it has anything new. No big deal really.

Thanks for answering my question. Overall, I have ZERO complaints with the way the board is set up.

Mike

Okay, We'll keep watch about this and if more people start seeing it as a concern I can change some of the settings to make the forum reads more of a server function.

Thanks again for your participation on the board.

I must say that this is driving me insane as well.

Noted, I will have another chat with the admins about a fix for this problem.
