Looking for non 0331 (at least ones w/out the crack heads being replaced) engine to replace mine that went to crap. For a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport.
New block & heads not out of the question...but probably too expensive (shipping and all), but I'm looking for all kinds of leads. I have no idea the condition of my existing motor aside from it is running, but compression is only around 75psi on Cylinder 1 and oil on the spark plugs.

You can always find 2000ish XJs in the Crazy Rays that have been in side or rear wrecks so you can assume the engines are good. There's a place in Upper Malboro that sells rebuilt 4.0 engines for like $1600 delivered.

I haven't been to Crazy Rays in forever, but a worth while look.
If if I take a higher risk, there is another source I can get Jeeps at whole sale (non-public) but I have to go through a friend (auto license bus. is required). Higher risk because I can't check the engine out. But I'd also have a Jeep that I could part out, offsetting some of the cost of the work.

Yes it does seem the Ebay prices have gone up a bit as of late. I've had my best luck with engines and transmissions finding a vehicle that was obviously well maintained but was in a bad side/rear impact accident and was written off as a loss by the insurance company. Those are usually a safe bet as far as the engines running well. I may hit a few yards this weekend and will report back if I see anything that has just arrived and looks promising.
