It's all a matter of personal preference. I was trying to find the link (i had found it via Google) someone put a set of E-codes, ipfs, etc in their XJ and took pics of all the beam patterns, it was a good writeup.
The e-code has a unique pattern (E-code stands for european code), it has a sharp vertical cut off on the left side of the beam so as not to blind oncoming drivers and the right side raises up to illuminate signs.
Beam Looks like this from inside vehicle up against a wall for a single headlight: __/
Beam Looks like this with two headlights installed: __/__/
Technically these are not approved for American roads, why Not? I don't know I think they are a safer pattern
THe IPFs are a standard american code headlamp with a good pattern. AMerican patterns are more diffuse across the top of the beam with equal lighting on either side
I actually ran the E-code in the right headlight and the IPF in the left.... Why? I had two IPFs and one was broken during shipping to me, so I went with a pair of E-Codes and someone backed into me and broke one. SO I was left with one of each and ran that for a while. I am almost done with a complete rebuild and I went with a pair of e-codes
Hope this helps.
