Stubby? I wouldn't exactly call that stubby.

Why did you choose to use we'll on "D-rings" instead of making a shackle mount as part of the bumper brackets?

Well I guess thats a matter of opinion. I feel a "Stubby" bumper goes between the front two "Frame" rails but does not extend over to cover the front tires / corners of the vehicle itself.

I chose to go this route because it is a good, cheap way of adding a recovery point to a bumper. If it's cheaper to build then it's cheaper to sell to you, the end user. I pre heat the bumper and D Ring with a torch prior to welding. Pre Heating the metals allows for a better weld because the two metals are both sitting at an elevated temperature to allow better weld penetration. I then weld the two together using a 240 volt Miller MIG welder, I turn the wire speed down and the heat up. This allows the most heat to get into the weld and in turn gives it it's strength. When I am done both parts glow red for a few seconds, this along with the blue in the metal itself is how you know both parts are fully bonded together by the welding process.

Hmm, I consider a Stubby bumper to give you an awesome approach angle. I believe I'd MUCH prefer have side coverage and an improved approach angle. Your definition of a Stubby bumper gives no side coverage and the same approach angle as any other winch bumper out there.

But, you have a good price so I won't harp on it too much.

It's cheaper to use that than to make the bumper brackets 2 inches longer, weld a piece of 1/4" steel on either side and drill a hole in it?

I agree with this. 100%. And as someone who owns this bumper it is a grate bumper at a affordable price. If you don't like the design don't buy it but you will be missing out.

I bring up perfectly reasonable questions and he gets all pissy.

The definition of "Stubby" was just my opinion. When I hear "Stubby" I think high clearance. You wouldn't have to worry about that in FL since yours is just a mud truck.

The D-ring topic has been covered a million times. I just can't see why he'd choose to go that route when it's pretty well known that trailer tie-down D-rings don't belong in vehicle recovery.
