The DW (Dear Wife) and I often take our Jeep into areas that are a LLOONNGG way from any main roads or other people. We live in a part of the US that does not have cell service in the areas where we go play with the Jeep. If something were to happen, we don't have any way to make contact to get help.

I have considered satellite phone but this doesn't seem to be a very good option. It is expensive and mostly requires a subscription to work. I will admit that I haven't researched this very well and I may be off on the downside of satellite phones. I know there are emergency satellite devices that you can send prepackaged messages. They don't allow real communication.

I have also considered buying a StarLink Mini to carry in the Jeep. With it I can connect to the Internet and have all the options of internet connectivity. In most cases I could use internet phone calling through my android cell phone, do text and email through my phone.

My idea for the Mini would be to get a Mini, set up an account for roaming, put the Mini on pause until/if I needed it then it I need it, I can activate it through my cell phone and have connectivity to almost anyone, almost anywhere.

Anybody have an emergency contact method? What do you think?

Ok so a little background on me before we jump into the thread. I have been a diesel mechanic for the last 15 years, I work for a company as a mobile tech, and I also have a business where I work on vehicles and equipment. I have owned xj’s in the past but I have never taken on an xj project like this.

The reason for the project: my son is 15, and wants an xj for his first vehicle. He snapped his ankle a few months ago and ate into the car budget so in order to have a nice one we are going to have to build it. But this will be a great learning opportunity for him and who doesn’t want to build a jeep with their kid.

Here are the details on the 3 xj’s that we have.

Green 1993, xj, 4wd, 4door: the drive train and all of its components are in great working order. The bodies exterior is a 6 out of 10, and the interior is a 7 out of 10. The underside of the unibody on the other hand…. Well let’s just say the floor pans are missing, the frame rails are rotted into pieces and sections of them are missing completely. Total cost in this one is $0.00

white 2000, xj, 2wd, 4door, right hand drive: the body is in really decent shape for the age, no major issues. The door hinges is cracked and needs to be welded back into place(I can weld). No rust to speak of on top or underneath. The transmission is full of neutrals(4 to be exact), the engine will start and run but it is having some issues staying running(maybe dead gas from sitting). The interior is a 6.5 out of 10. This is the one that he wants to build. Total cost in it so far is 500.00

silver 2000, xj, 4wd, 4 door, right hand drive: the body is not in the best shape, there are some areas in the fenders and door jam area that would take patch panels to fix. The underside is pretty much rust free. The transmission and t case are sitting in the back, and I would assume they are no good. The engine is an unknown as well, I have not started it yet. Interior is a 4 out of 10 and the headliner is mia. Total cost in this one is 300.00.

the white one and the silver one had to be purchased together

we are wanting to take 3 and make 1, and maybe get enough good patch panels out of the green one to work on the silver one.

I know the 2000 is coil on plug and that the 93 is distributor style, so I’m not sure what complications I am going to run into there. Also the transmission plugs may be different and possibly the pick up for the vehicle speed sensor may have to be swapped over.

I am sure someone on here has attempted to swap older into later, looking for advice or a thread I can go to.

pictures to come later
