Jeep Grand Cherokee 1993-2004: Why is the ABS Light On?

An illuminated ABS light can signal a few different problems with your Jeep Grand Cherokee. This article will show you how to diagnose and correct the problem to make that annoying light go away for good.

This article applies to the Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ and WJ (1993-2004).

An illuminated ABS light signals an electrical problem within the ABS system, but this can mean issues with any number of parts. The key to tracking down the source of the issue is a scan tool that has the ability to read ABS codes. This will tell you exactly where to look and indicate which part might be causing the light to stay on. If you don't have a scanner or the means to purchase one, most local parts stores have them available to use for free. Problems can run the gauntlet from a bad ABS module, which can run you upwards of $400, to a bad ABS sensor, which generally costs around $30. Or, you might just have a damaged connector or blown fuse. Keep reading and we'll help you diagnose and correct the issue, whatever it may be.

Materials Needed

  • Scan tool that can read ABS codes, or ABS scan tool
  • Test light
  • Fuses

Step 1 – Use scan tool to pull code

The ABS data link connector is located underneath the cigarette lighter behind the carpet. It is an 8-pin connector, but a 6-pin data connector can be used as well. Plug the scanner in and read the code that it displays. A simple internet search will tell you what problem your code indicates and help lead you in the right direction, even if the part itself isn't the source of the issue.

Step 2 – Check your fuses

Check your fuses to see if one of them that controls any components of the ABS system might be blown. If needed, replace them. Also, use a test light to ensure the fuses are getting power. If they are not, there could be a problem with the ABS module or another electrical component. Figure 2 is a fuse box diagram for the WJ Grand Cherokee, but check the inside of your fuse box cover for your particular application.

Step 3 – Check your wiring and connections

Beginning at the ABS control module, check all the wiring and connections for damage or wiring that might have come loose or even become disconnected. Check under the driver's side kick panel, where the plug for the ABS sensors is located. The connector is square shaped, around 3/4", and contains light green and yellow wires. Make sure the wires and the connector are in good shape and use your test light to ensure that they aren't shorted out. If you find any damaged wiring or connectors, replacement parts are generally available for just a few dollars.
