Jeep Cherokee 1984-2001: How to Remove Automatic Shift Knob

Are you upgrading your Jeep's shift knob, or do you perhaps need to remove the center console? Learn how to remove it here.

This article applies to the Jeep Cherokee XJ (1984-2001).

Your Jeep's shift knob is the handle located at the very top of the shifter. It has an "L" shape designed for an ergonomic feel, and for you to shift more easily through the gears while driving (a manual transmission shift knob is shaped differently). As with other components in your Jeep, the shift knob is highly exposed to daily wear and tear, so it is susceptible to deteriorating or cracking over time, which makes it look rather ugly. Follow this step-by-step guide on how to remove your automatic transmission's shift knob. You'll be surprised just how simple it is.

Materials Needed

  • Gloves (optional)
  • Small hammer (optional)
  • Lots of muscle strength

This is perhaps one of the very few one-step repairs that will ever be performed on your Jeep. Removing the automatic transmission shift knob normally does not require any tools, as all you have to do is yank it upward. Some CherokeeForum members advise using a small hammer to lightly tap the knob upward just to unsettle the shifter a bit. Also, mechanic or rubber gloves may provide better grip but aren't required.

Step 1 – Remove the shift knob

Follow these steps to remove the shifter:

  • Make sure the parking brake is on.
  • Press down on the brake, and shift the transmission to any gear other than "Park" to avoid hitting the dash upon removal.
  • Wrap both hands around the shift knob and pull it in an upward motion until it starts to slide off (this may take a few tries).
  • If unsuccessful in pulling the knob out with your hands, you may use the small hammer and/or gloves for a little help.

Pro Tip

There is conflicting information on the internet about the shift knob being attached by a screw or bolt, but this does not apply to this model year range of Jeep Cherokees. Simply pull the knob with force.
