This article applies to the Jeep Cherokee XJ (1984-1996).

There are a number of reasons why a check engine light might come on, but we'll discuss those reasons at another time. While you'll need to resolve the main issue to keep the check engine light from reappearing, resetting the light itself is actually quite easy. You won't need to visit your local Jeep dealership or automotive mechanic to complete the process, but you will need to pop the hood of your truck and follow the few instructions we've laid out here. All in all, the process is quick and simple.

Materials Needed

  • OBD-II diagnostic scan tool (optional)
  • Ratchet and socket set

Step 1 – Pull up the trouble code(s)

Use an OBD-II scan tool to retrieve the ECU's trouble code(s). Make sure to address and repair the problem before attempting to clear the check engine light. The problem could be as simple as a loose gas cap or bad spark plugs, but you won't know where to turn your attention until you detect the actual faulty component that is at play.

Pro Tip

An on-board diagnostics (OBD-II) scan tool could run you as little as $20 or as high as $500. If you do not own a scan tool or don't want to purchase one, head down to your local auto parts store and have them retrieve the trouble code(s) for free. It's highly recommended; however, first obtain confirmation that there is no charge.

Step 2 – Disconnect and reconnect the battery

  • Pop the hood of your Jeep and disconnect the battery's negative terminal (black). Move the cable away from the battery and make sure the negative lead cannot contact the terminal.
  • Then disconnect the battery's positive terminal (red) and move the cable away.
  • Ground the positive lead by holding it against an open metal surface.
  • Allow the battery to discharge for five to ten minutes.

  • Reconnect the positive battery terminal (red) followed by the negative terminal (black).
  • Without starting the engine, flip the ignition switch into the "ON" position.

Note

You must reconnect the battery cables for this step to work.

Step 3 – Turn the headlights on and then off

  • With the engine still off, turn your headlights on and then off.
  • Next, flip the ignition switch into the "OFF" position.

You have now erased your Jeep's adaptive memory and effectively reset the check engine light.

Pro Tip

As a general rule, you should service your Jeep every 3,000 to 6,000 miles, or as needed.
