About the only "advantage" I see to a Wrangler is that it is built on a frame, probably making it marginally stronger than an XJ. I say marginally because the XJ's unibody structure is very strong and totally capable off road. Beyond that, the XJ has quite a few more advantages over Wranglers and CJ's especially when it comes to practicality. I would like to get a classic CJ7- not to fit in with any crowd, I have just always liked it since building the Mork and Mindy CJ7 model kit as a kid. (One of the better fit and finish Jeep model kits made.) Most Wranglers here in Erie are hard tops and the top is kept on all year long. Sort of defeats the top and doors off west coast thing to the Wrangler.

As a general statement; I really don't think it's approiate to put down other groups simply because they drive a different vehicle then you drive.

I'm very guilty of the above myself.

Prior to buying my first XJ, I drove and raced nothing but sports cars. Let's just say I didn't think highly of any kind of truck . I bought my first XJ soley to transport racing mtb bikes inside the vehicle to protect them. The rig (at the time) was nothing more then a piece of xxxx to transport the bikes. It took me 6 months and damaged MTB's to convince myself to even buy an XJ. Over 10 years, the MTB's and sports cars have fallen out of favor. Now I have 4 jeeps, all that I cherish .

A Harley rider may put down a metric rider or the other way around. Yet both share a higher commonality. They both like to ride. Whethe it's a CJ, MJ, SJ, XJ, TJ, WJ, KJ, YJ, ZJ, etc, they're all jeeps. Going up a notch, whether a Jeep, Ford, GM, etc. They are all trucks.

You may not personally relate to something that differs from your own beliefs, but that doesn't make the other wrong. If we all drove exactly the same thing and had similar likes, dislikes, etc, it would be a pretty boring world.

Wrangler owners are jelouse because the xjs are less $ and the only thing they can do that we can't is take off the roof and they also have a trunk 4 doors and are much quieter on the road

xj4fun,

patriors, commanders, compass, and new liberty are NOT what I consider jeeps. they're what I consider minivans that are mis-branded.

Have you driven a Commander! Don't knock it till you drive it.

I own one and it is a JEEP! It just looks fancy.

but i'd still call the patriot, commander, compass, and liberty tupperware on wheels, a stock liberty may be able to go on some of the same trails a stock cherokee can go on but in my opinion the liberty looks cheaper, is cheaper, and has a worse design

Yes! I have.

it drove like a sports car.

a jeep is NOT a sports car. a jeep is a capable, SOLID AXLE vehicle which can be modified (cheaply) for off-road use and enjoyed in all forms of terrain.

a Commander CANNOT do the same as even a lowered cherokee 4x4. they are minivans, and are not to be considered a "offroad" machine.

Fair enough. But the jeep line is always evolving. Sometimes for what we might consider the better (Rubi's, Unlimited, etc) and sometimes changing direction moving away from a specific market segment. Like it or not, the latter is direction the overall market is going .

So what is a jeep? Is it solely based on off-road ability. If this is your definition in OE form a short SWB would really be the most accurate. What about comfort and luxury? The WJ' and WK's have this segment. What about the classic business model from the 40's through mid 80's which defined the brand, utilitarian, inexpensive and perfect for the farmer, rancher or hunter that needed mild off-road ability.

Let's say your at a bar joking about all the rigs you've mentioned. A few seats over is a guy that has a KJ. He asks if you would consider lowering yourself to see is KJ. The reason I included KJ's in my response is because I know a guy that built a KJ converting to live axles, coilovers, etc. This KJ will spank any moderately modified XJ I've seen come up against him.
Granted his KJ is highly modified, so the comparison is not apples-to-apples. But it's a modified KJ against a modified XJ .

I guess using your bias, folks on high end fabrication / competition boards are justified in statements similar to the one below.

Anyone that doesn't have a triangulated caged and boxed framed XJ with less then D60's, an Atlas or similar with a crawl ratio exceeding 100:1, custom long arms and 39's or greater is a mall crawler?

The joking you do about the vehicles you've mentioned, is exactly what they are saying when thinking about most rigs on most jeep boards.
So I guess everything is relative, which justifies the behavior.

Wouldn't you prefer these experienced fabricators extend a hand and treat you as an equal, instead of a mall crawler? I know I would . BTW, the above statement was from an entire thread on another board. I had slightly edit the content removing certain 4 letter words. It's a very lively thread.

Remember the frumpy girl you teased in junior high school. Perhaps you meet her 5 years later and she's now a smoking cheerleader .

I know my views have changed after dropping my bias and meeting the jeep community as a whole. It changed my life for the better .

Just my 02, which isn't worth that much.

In Colorado we have the Mile High Jeep Club. All jeeps are welcome. I'm thinking about joining them. From what I can tell not much discrimination as to what you drive as long as it has tow hooks so they can pull your *** out when you get stuck

I don't know what Commander you drove but it didn't drive like a sports car .

It does have solid rear axle. And unforunatley IFS. So it is not cheap to lift. But I have seen some 2in BB on them and they perform pretty well. No where near van like. I am a member of the JeepCommanderF0rum and they have some nice rigs over there! I see no difference in there offroad capabilty than the new WJ's
