Well.. Buck... you might be familiar with them... but you are DEAD WRONG about the deployments...My brother in law is in the Air Farce. He recently returned to Japan from his fourth 6 month deployment to Iraq. If you count the two months in Texas before the actual deployment and the month elsewhere.. deployments are nine months not 90 days.

The deployment cycles for all branches have changed since the GWOT started. The navy would do 6 month cruises before the war. My last 2 which have been during the war have been 10 months...but, then if you count all the work up/training boat dets before we go...well, that's another 5-6 months tacked on. I'd still say the USAF and USN have it better than the Army and Marines who are on the ground in country. They have been doing 12 - 15 month deployments. I personally know many sailors who have done IA tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. When they go, it's for at least 12 months plus the 2 months of weapons training they do down in Texas. So, while I may be a bit wrong I don't think DEAD WRONG are the right words, buddy. I was deployed on the sand in Saudi Arabia for 3.5 months at Prince Sultan Air base...anybody who is in the know, knows that was a USAF base. This was before the GWOT actually started but, while I was there for 3+ months. I saw the USAF units come and go. I can only speak from my personal experience and as I said I am Navy. I'm sure there are plenty of experts out there who know the USAF better than I do.

Agreed, brother. We use to call the Coastys "The fare weather navy" LOL....but, those guys are out in the nastiest storms there are, tracking them and rescuing people. Also, on my last 2 cruises to the gulf during the war we had a USCG cutter in the Carrier battlegroup.

Exactly... if you want it. Get it in "writing". Don't let them put you in a job you don't like because you will stuck with it for some time.

I wanted 63B (light wheeled vehicle mechanic), but the unit I wanted didn't have any slots open so I settled for 52D (Generator Mechanic) because there were a couple of those slots open. Being in the guard I got to pick my unit and stayed with them for 8yrs. When I left they re-organized and the units no longer had a maintenance section so all the mechanics had to find other companies. None of which were close so I am glad my 8yrs ended when they did. At anyrate.. Since we rarely used the generators I still got to be a truck mechanic which is what I wanted. However, the slot was only an e4 slot and if I would have stayed in I would have had to change my MOS to gain rank.

There are parts I enjoyed and parts I hated. I enjoyed the camaraderie and working on/driving the trucks, the shooting, the field exercises, etc.

Get use to hurry up and wait...

yeah while i was in we cracked at the coast guard also... actually i still do crack about the coast guard "boot camp" with there "stress" cards... but ive actually been looking into go into them as like a reserve... but unlike everyone else if i went to them my rank would drop more then likely to E-3... unless i scored a aircraft squadron in GA... which there is only 2 i think... and i would have to go to schooling for whatever... just dont have to do there boot camp... sucks... im doing my rounds with the fire department right now and if i dont get hired on then im going coast guard probly... i figure why not... alittle weekend work which i already do... extra (small) check... a (small) retirement... and if i ever get tired of it all i gotta do is say goodbye... with prior active duty you can get out when ever you want... from the marine corps to the coast guard... my marine buddies are gonna pick on me so bad... lol

i just typed a big ole long thing and it messed up... hate that junk... to bounce off what he said... even writting doesnt help... i had it and was suppose to work on f18 airframes... they changed it half way through school and put me in general support equipment... me and dad raised cain with my recruiter and it actually got changed but to f18 powerplants mechanic... they say its impossible to change your MOS to what you want after your in but some how i got lucky... So whether you have paper work or not it doesnt matter... they will stick it to you from any angle they like...

as far as the deployment things, you all talk like they are a bad thing, I said this before, I wanna be deployed! Alot of what you guys are saying are down falls, are the reasons why I wanna join! I actually wanted to join the Marines at first, however, they wont garentee my MOS.

I am going to say this once

I have told my friends, close friends, and I feel like everyone is upset because I am leaving. I dont wanna leave friends and people behind, however, I shouldnt change, or halt my life for anyone else but me! If its what I wanna do, then let me do it! I just wish everyone would see it how I see it! I am doing this for me! I am not doing this to punish anyone or run away from people.

I wish I had people who supported me more (in the real world)

if they dont support you then there not a true friends as you thought... and they are also cowards... most people today are cowards and thats this country problem... i liked being deployed to Iraq... i made alot more money... although a civilian in iraq makes $100,000 or more tax free compared to my $30,000... but i had a blast doing what i did and im proud of what i did... its was a better base the beaufort SC ill tell ya that... i just wish the military did more praising on what was done good then hating when something was done bad... they used to pull u out back and beat some sence into you... now its paper work... NJP 2 month half pay deduction in rank... WTF... now the whole families going to suffer cause ya cant make the dang house payment... its stupid... My dad did 9 years active duty and got out... then when i went in he went back in as a reserve and hes still a marine reserve... my little sister went and joined the Marine reserves also as a fire fighter... she volunteered to go to africa for 6 months and had just got back and volunteered to go to the same base me and dad were on in Al Asad Iraq... my mom did 8 years in the Navy as a medic and search and rescue... one of the first of 4 women aloud to get into the search and rescue team... got grandparents and uncles that were all in also so i come from a very good understanding of the military... although it did great things for me also it just wasnt for me to stay active and continue on... right now i go to college... HOPE grant pays for my school actually and the GI Bill is a $1,350 check deposited in my bank every month since school is already paid for... so i started a business cause i could live off of that... wouldnt be able to do this without the GI Bill and the military... so it does have pros and cons... and honestly the military is going to be how you make it... the deployments are going to be how you make it... all of it will be how you make it... if you only see the negative in things then your going to hate the military... ill tell you that right now...

Gearheadette,
With all the stuff I put in my rant, I just want to make sure you know that I support you in your decision Perhaps I like to play the opposition at times JUST to spark other people to think for them selves lol

Either way - you are STILL one of US!!!
