Default Becoming A Mechanic

I'm considering going through an Auto Tech course at my community college. I started out wanting to major in civil engineering but I'm not really liking that idea much anymore. I need something more hands-on. I've always liked cars/trucks and since I got my jeep and worked on it a little bit it has got me convinced that I would like to be a mechanic. Any suggestions or words of advice would be appreciated.

Hmmm... If you dont mind my asking, why did you change your mind about civil engineering? I went to a college last Sunday and an engineering professor said that was the most promising engineering job... but he also said it would be a good idea to be able to speak Chinese too...lol

I ask because Im wanting to be some sort of engineer...

But yes, I have considered some sort of mechanic too... Ive really considered being a marine mechanic, but I have no engine skills...lol Plus boats seem to be something that people want to be rid of these days...

I wanted to go into diesel tech stuff in college but my moms ex husband who has been a mechanic for most of his life told me not to. He said a couple things to keep in mind are theyre laying mechanics off like crazy, its very hard work, you end up killing your back lifting heavy stuff all the time (he has back problems), and he said "you get tired of being smelly and dirty all the time".. Just keep that in mind, it seems like he has some good points and knows from experience. Im not trying to turn you off of being a mechanic, if thats what you want to do then youre gonna do it no matter what anyone says. When I go to community college next fall I will probably still take some auto tech classes and get a certificate. I will also take some computer tech classes. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give you my opinion...

I discovered that engineering was going to be more computer and paperwork than I expected. I have to be doing something physical or else I get sidetracked and lose interest. I hear it is a great field, good money, and jobs are available, just not the right thing for me.

When I was in high school the ONLY mechanic type class was a Marine Engine repair class. Around here if you are anywhere around a boat you either go out on the boat as a charter/commercial fisherman/captain/mate etc. Or you repair the charter/commercial boats. Or build them.

Actually I take that back I think there was a small engine repair class too (lawnmowers and the like)

I think the Community College here only offers marine or small engine repair too.

You can do it, I'm heading out to do it to. The thing is, you can't just be any tech, you have to be the best.
