Default Beadlocks?

I remember reading somewhere, probably here about beadlocks being illegal on the road.

I am just curious why that is or if it varys from state to state or whatever.

Seems like beadlocks wouldnt be much different from regular rims and even a bit more benificial.

Thanks for any Info.

Beadlocks need a DOT number on them to be legal. There are some out there now. The Feds want their taxes and fees.

I remember reading one time it has to do with maintenance......you need to keep an eye out on the torque of the bolts to make sure it is working the way it should.......and they are supposed to be hard to balance........I dont' know, but they do make DOT approved ones now also.

There is another issue I read about that is relevant. The thickness of beads on off road tires has increased and is incompatible with some of the older bead locks. The locking ring does not go down all the way and can cause the bolts to break. The writer of the article sustained a permanent injury due to an exploding bead lock.

Yeah I think that can happen if the bolts different torque too.......I think that was what I read about it. I think it comes down to "it's not dummy proof" and you gotta keep an eye on them, but that's my opinion

you also have people that build thing themselves that dont really need to be and i would rather not have a guy driving next to me with a big lifted vehicle with everything rigged and homemade when it shouldnt be then his rim explodes and who knows how many people get hurt!

i have never seen a law saying beadlocks are illegal for street use

i have never seen a law stating your wheels must be dot approved for street use

That is true, they may pull you over and not say a thing because there are so many look alikes and the average cop doesn't know enough about vehicles to know the difference. People get pulled over all the time with tires sticking out several inches and not cited even though tires are supposed to be covered.

But what the law does state is that wheels and tires have to be DOT approved. When they are, they are issued a number for each model and type. Check your tires. They will have a number on them. Wheels should have a number on them also if they are aftermarket.

Then maybe you should do some research. Considering everything looks so unsafe to you.

your longarms are unsafe. a production "dot approved" wheel being modified for beadlocks and new beadlock wheels are quite safe.

That doesn't mean your wheels are DOT approved anymore..........and they would be as safe as the welds......if done by a reputable welder I would assume they are safe
