Default Need help decoding VIN for trans type

I am looking for an AX-15 for my 98 TJ. I found a 88 MJ with the 4.0L and the 5 spd. (4x4). I know in the middle of 1988 or so they switched over to the AX-15, but I don't know when. Here's the VIN of the MJ 1JTML65P2JT146559, would this have the AX-15 I need or is it the BA-10 or whatever the other 5 spd was?

Thanks for any help you can give.

The BA is a better built transmission. And you can identify this transmission. By look. If you look under the jeep and see a series of bolts going from side to side along the bottom it's a BA because you have to split this transmission in half hotdog style to take it apart. VS the AX15 has a solid body and a removable top cover to take out all the gears and shaft.

The BA IS NOT a better built manual transmission....this is why jeep enthusiasts always swap out the ba/10 for the ax15 and is a very popular swap amongst the comanches....because of the years they were made....
Iirc the ax15s starting coming in the comanches around late 89s-92....
But internal slave....
The OP- the comanche ax15 will have a shorter shaft and will not fit your 98tj unless you get the correct pilot bearing and all the nessacery parts to swap to a external slave ax15....
Unless it's already been swapped over....if you already want one with an external slave look for the 94+ cherokees or 93+ wrangler ax15 that have the external slave bellhousing

Thanks for the info. I suppose I could take the 5spd tranny out of my 97 2dr Cherokee. NOT ! It's in too good of shape. Thanks for the info though, I'll keep searching. I wasn't sure about the slave cylinder issue either, thanks for clearing that up.

There's nothing wrong with an internal slave cylinder unless you're one who enjoys submarining your Jeep or burying it in mudholes every weekend.
