I found an 87 mj with absolutely zero rust, lifted 3'' with a 5 speed manual trans. 175k miles or so. Has dana 44 front and rear axles. I have a 99 xj but need a truck so want to get this one and sell my xj. It has obviously has some mods so im hopeful it doesnt have the peugeot trans but just to be sure how can i tell the difference between the ax-15 and the ba-10 peugeot? Also does this have a good transfer case stock for 87? Im hoping one of the previous owners put in the ax15 and a a 231 tcase. also guy is asking 4k does that sound reasonable? its really clean. If i get it i plan on taking out the roll bars because ill be using it for work and i need the space for a toolbox etc.

Well, I just got up.
Transfer case is fine.
Peugeot trans has a seam where the 2 halfs bolt together lengthwise.
Should have POSSIBLY a Dana 44 rear but generally a Dana 30 front.
I won't comment on price because I don't keep up with that stuff.

So i checked it out. I literally only spent a minute with the truck and walked away. I looked underneath saw a peugeot and left. This is a work truck for me so i know it will fail. I dont want to deal with finding an ax15 and installing it for a truck with a price tag of 4300. I will however say it is likely the cleanest mj in my area of the country from looking at it and it looks to have always been garaged.

The BA10 would run and drive as long as you don't try to drive it like a Ferrari. Just drive sensibly until you come across a good used AX-15 and you'll be fine.

A simple unbolt and bolt on as long as you have everything like the bellhousing, throwout bearing and slave cylinder. All your doing is taking the AX-15 off of one vehicle and installing it onto another. Transmissions are just heavy, that's all.

A trans is alot easier to deal with than trying to find another clean rust free mj. The are getting VERY hard to find. I also doubt that he has a 44 in the front. the wheel base looks the same as stock so that leaves two options for the front dana 44 that was swapped in. A wrangler tj, or lj rubicon dana 44 (which run 800-1400 used) or a full size wagoner narrow width 44 swap (which run around 400-600 complete). Regardless for that truck I would pay 3500 any day of the week for it and if it really has the 44 up front that would make my day. Also you didnt mention if it had the 4 banger or the 4.0. That would be more of a deciding factor for me than the the trans. But as long as you treat it right it will be fine. Do some research and see if it really has a dana 44 in the front. If it doesn't then you can try to talk the guy down because the truck doesn't have what he said it did.
