4spd to 5spd swap in 2WD comanche HELP
I don't know why I"m having so much problem with finding info on this.
Also, Im positive that I posted here but my profile shows nothing.
Then, did a search (in the comanche tech) section and "Sorry no matches" comes up with "4spd to 5spd swap in 2wd comanche"
So, YES i did a search.. they NEVER come up with what I think is pertinent to my initial search.. and I don't have time to sit and read through thousands of threads to just get bits and pieces of what I need.
I've joined several sites and asked this but no real good info or directions to a 2WD swap. NOT 4WD!!!
Anywho, Got a '88 comanche Pioneer for my son and plans have changed.
But since I'm using it for my daily, I'd like to swap in a 5spd.
The 5spd that I have is from a 2001 Dakota (also with engine and harness)
that I've read that will "just swap in". What i'm looking for is IF it WILL just swap in.?
Does the drive shaft have the same yokes?
Does the wiring have the same connections?
Do the shifters fit in the same holes?
I'd rather not have responses of:
"yup, it'll swap"
I know that the mounts are different, so I got that..
Thanks for the help.

4spd to 5spd swap in 2WD comanche HELP
Majority of Dakotas had AX-15's. Your 2.5L has an AX-4 4spd. The AX-5 5spd is a direct swap. The Dakota AX-15 will require a few things like the matching bell housing. Look up 88Whitecomanche and his build thread here. He just did the AX-5 to AX-15 swap so you can see the process.

What axle ratio does your Comanche have?
All this could be for nothing if it's geared so high now that 5th would be rendered useless.

after the purchase I did lots of searching for info and found that most say it should have a 4.10. BUT, ive also read that it should have a 3.31...
These were from Jeep/Chrysler sites..
From what I've gathered from ALPAR, it's a 1988 Comanche Pioneer (miser edition) with the 2.5 motor, fuel injected, 3.31 that's supposed to get around 25mpg
But from 'jeep' buds that I talk to here, they all say "hey, If you ever want to sell that 4.10 rear"......
I put some Grand Cherokee 16" wheels on it with 235.70.16's so it sits around 2" taller than the stock tires. So it doesn't really wind out at hwy speeds.
Also, did the 'cluster swap' and know my tach is off. (or it's got a REALLY tall rear gear) Just doesn't seem to be jiving with the sound of the motor. during shifts. (maybe it IS a 3.31)
I don't really haul heavy loads per se, Mostly my daily back and forth to work.
Just took a little trip to Jackson Tn, and made it there and back on a half tank going 70 most of the way.
In addition to this, EVERY thread that I've found doing the 'search' is a 4wd application..
It seems that I can spend HOURS 'searching' for little to no info that's applicable to MY situation.
This ISN'T my life long dream to own, (it's going up for sale here in a bit) and most threads deal with several areas of 'restoration' or 'fab/modification' that expound into weeks or months of work.
I wish the 'comanche' (really ALL models) section had sticky's for all associated departments/sub catagories to that particular vehicle/model.
I.E.:
Body, Suspension, Brakes, Frame, Wheels/tires, Fuel, Cooling,
Transmission (sub auto, manual), Engine (sub gas{sub'd into displacements}, diesel.... And on and on.
Categories like, "what did you do to your jeep this week" is a rabbit trail that I really don't want to go down. NOT saying that it's a bad topic, just for a different section.
It would really clarify things IMMENSELY!! Then to 'sticky' the topics that are asked about the most, or that should be done for the enjoyment for that ____.
Then one could 'search' that section/thread and STAY in that mindset.
So one doesn't have to read the pissin and moanin of jealous know-it-alls..
Sorry, but not really.
Ahh.. Now that I got that off my chest, I'll take a look at the thread you brought up and dig in..
Thanks
Errol

4spd to 5spd swap in 2WD comanche HELP
Gearing depends on your engine.
3.31 was a gearing option for the 2.8L V6 called "Economy Package" (I had these gears w/my 85 Xj but swapped to 3.55's)
The 2.5L came with two available gear ratios. 3.55's for the 4spd models and 4.10's for the 5spd models. 4.0L models came with two main options 3.55's for the Automatics and 3.07's for the two 5spds available. Now there was a 3.73 option for the Automatics.

There's a tag on the diff cover. Find out for yourself which gear ratio you have.

The 5speed from the 2.5 Dakota is an ax15. It will swap in but not a "direct" swap there are parts to need to acquire before swapping to the ax15....
Driveshaft will have to be either shorten or lengthen.
Your going from internal to external slave.(which is good if your slave cylinder ever dies out/don't have to drop the transmission to swap that out)
If your going to keep your current 2.5 then look up ax5 to ax15 swap to acquire the part #s to do the swap...
As for the engine swap....there is a guy in Comanche forum who did this swap in which you would have to message him through that site to find out exactly what he did....
He swapped the Dakota engine and 2wd ax15 trans to his Comanche....
Here's his build thread....not descriptive but he shows he has done the Dakota swap...

Cruiser: Nope.. NO tag. already looked when I flushed the rear.
Thanks again guys. I'll have more time to look at stuff in the next few days.
I just don't understand why these threads DON'T come up when I do a search..
C/C frustrates me so much, that's why I came here to ask..
(that and I have more non-comanche jeep 'projects')
