Your XJ was built the same way. This is not new technology.

If I were you, I'd feel guilty for owning that XJ of yours.

It replaces some, but adds other skilled technicians. Who do you think programs, troubleshoots, and maintains the robots. Plus you get consistent quality that people cannot reproduce. Automated manufacturing is a fact of life, companies that mass produce cannot survive without it.

Wow, they're even painted by robots.

We're REALLY screwed when they replace the car salesmen with robots, NO WAY a robot's letting you off the lot without buying the under coating and extended warranty.

They'll never tire, they'll argue endlessly about why you need the fabric and paint protection.

And don't even get me started on robot finance mangers.

Your XJ was likely painted by robots also. It was dipped in the solutions before painting for sure. Renault brought that robotic technology here to build the XJ.

Skilled technicians, many with collage degrees, some of them foreigners, while Joe Sixpack and Johnny Punchclock sit at home collecting unemployment.

Not only that, robots can't come in drunk or high. I knew a guy that worked as a final inspector in a Chrysler plant that would go in high on acid.

Since I am in the skilled technician/engineering field with a college degree, I do not see an issue with it. I worked for what I have and it is benefiting myself and my family. I do not work for the auto industry, but I do work in a heavily automated industrial environment. Joe Sixpack and Johnny Punchclock can go to school and get a technical degree just like many people I work with on a daily basis.

^This, and it is more than just about cost savings, the robots simply do a better and more consistent job with precise repetitive tasks. One of my professors (a former GM Supply chain manager) once pointed this out: "You'll see robots in the US factories which were installed primarily due to the cost of labor, you'll see those same robots in the Mexican factories (which were installed a few years after they were in US plants), even though human labor would be cheaper, because the quality and consistency of human workers simply cannot match that of the robots in a large-scale fast-paced production environment" (maybe not the exact quote but pretty close).

Do you really want to go back to the 60-70s where your brand-new car will likely have several issues before you even drive it off the lot and likely require several repairs just in the first few years of ownership?
