Hello Guys,

I am very interested in buying (not leasing) the new Cherokee. I like the overall look of the car, plus the options package offered by the company is quite robust. If I purchase the car, then it will almost exclusively be a city car, that is I do not plan to do an offroading with the car.

With that assumption, I am thinking of getting the Fwd, 4 cylinder version of the car.

However, as I continue to do my research, I have come across chatter that the car's engine is inferior to its foreign made competitors. Previous owners complained about Jeep engines not being durable for the long term and also they are required to take their cars to the service center more often because of various engine troubles.

As I am looking to make a purchase in the near future, I was wondering if you guys can share your experiences on owning Jeep vehicles and especially stress on any engine issues that you might have faced in the past.

Thank you in advance for any guidance provided.

I'm not sure anyone on this forum can answer your questions. This is more a forum for people with the older versions of the Cherokee especially with the 4x4 4.0L inline 6 engines. The older 4.0L Jeep engine is one of the most durable and longest lasting engines ever made. Does the "Fwd" in your post stand for "Front Wheel Drive"? If it does and there is such a thing in a new Jeep that is almost not even a Cherokee. If it stand for "Four Wheel Drive" then ok

go with a Trailhawk, it has skid plates, factory lift . the active drive II system, dictates when the rear wheels gets power to em.. its all wheel drive.
so its kinda like a front wheel drive when on the highway
it handles like a sports car.
off road it has a 4:56:1 gear which will dig down and go.
the 2.4 does not lack power with the gear ratio you wont notice your in a 4 cylinder.
im getting as of now and its getting better by the day.. 27mpg on the highway.
trailhawk has Auto mode for cruising and it will adjust its self to situations you may encounter while driving..
it has Snow, Sports, Mud/Sand & Rock mode with rear Lockers! which is awesome to have in bad situations.
each setting will adjust the tire pressure for you for the terrain/conditions presented..
and its comfy.. rides smooth too.. wont shatter your spine like my JK Sahara did..
Mine encountered some computer issues.. which Chrysler is working on at the moment.. other than that 1 fault.
I have to honestly say its a sweet ride. and YES IT WILL HOLD ITS OWN AGAINST AN XJ! if not leave one sitting on the trail.. I owned and loved a 96 xj sport.. 4.0 h.o. and so far i have went UP a few hill climbs my XJ and JK wouldnt go up.. deep mud? i dunno about that..
but if you plan on water crossings.. dont do it in a 2.4.. it has a ram air intake in front of the radiator.. other models are behind the radiator.
you are on the correct side of the Cherokee forum to discuss KLs..
I got mine fully loaded with the exception of a sunroof and parking assist. after tax and all the extra warranties .. 59k and some change..

If you want to tow a camper or something heavy.. go with a v6. no need to stress any small engine with heavy weight.. a jet ski and or bass boat.. no problem with the 4 banger.. anything bigger youd be killing it..
o yea... as far as other vehicles go, im in the Appalachian area.. big mountains and i really hadnt seen many foreign suvs that can hang going up mountains.. they seem to loose power.. my 2.4 keeps on trucking with out foot to floor
