Do you really need more than 7 gears in a small SUV?

Or just about any vehicle (non-commercial anyway). My Mustang has a 6-speed (manual) and there is only about a 500rpm difference between the gears except for overdrive (6th) which is close to a 1,000rpm difference, I could see a second overdrive with a V6 or V8 (my Mustang with the 5.0L "coyote" V8 can accelerate up a decent grade in overdrive so a second higher OD could probably improve hwy mileage a bit) but anything beyond 7 gears with two ODs has probably reached the point of diminishing returns seems unnecessarily complex and likely does a better job at increasing cost and reducing reliability than it does in improving fuel economy.

The reason that some car manufacturers are implementing transmissions with more gears is so the engine is not being spun to fast or put into too much of a load. Mountain bicycles are trying this as well. Rather than thinking it as more think of it as the right gear. Being in the "right gear" theoretically means better fuel efficiency.

If they want to put to rest which is better, then they better expect to do it right and not half *** it. That means using a Cherokee that had the upcountry package(skids, LSD rear, tow, lift, etc..) remember the trail hawk is exactly like the upcountry was for us. The number they use for comparison, did they even think to use a jeep with the upcountry package? Probably not which again leads to false claims and information, people keep saying that its locked and the xj is open diffs. Like no one remembers we had a limited slip differential option?!?!

Looks like a stock KL will never see 30mpg either.

Does anyone think a 4000 pound 4x4 with a V6 is going to get vastly improved mileage over an XJ?
