So, might not be the right place to ask this but when looking at a higher mileage xj what are common wear and tear items I should look to replace.
So far I've seen on most:
Crank position sensor
Water pump
Belts
Coil pack and radiator?

When buying a new-to-you vehicle, it's recommended to replace all fluids and the cooling system parts as the 4.0 runs hot. It's cheap insurance to make sure the cooling system is functioning properly. Plus, you don't have proof of what the previous owner did to maintain it properly.
You're in for a treat with the XJ. Strong running vehicle that many CF members have run into the 300,000 miles. Tons of cool mods and endless ways to build them up. Check the build threads here: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f46/ for cool ideas.
Since you're in the market, I'll also list this: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/loo...osting-224555/
And as always, most guys here have been wrenching on them since they could hold a wrench and are perfectly willing to help you do the same.
Good luck in your search!

Oh and I'm sure everyone has their opinion on this but I'd steer clear of the 2000/2001 XJ unless the 0331 head has been replaced with a better head or you're looking to replace it yourself (bargaining chip). They're a poor casting and have heard they can last forever or blow up a mile after signing the title. They're a time bomb.
Other than that, I can't think of anything you would *need* to replace as soon as you buy. Would just have to give your prospective ride a good look and see what would need replacing. Don't trust the previous owner's word. He may be lying or may not even know. I bought a $500 XJ from my dad since the both of us thought it was ready to roll. $1500 later, I'm starting to feel more comfortable taking it on longer trips lol. But that's a testament of how I feel about Jeeps. I know putting in three times what I bought it for will get me a vehicle that will last a long time.
