I don't recommend red. It ends up being dim. Check the first post of the thread for specifics on kits and prices.
A full interior kit is $55 for the '87. That includes all lights that come on when the door opens (white) and cluster/instrument lamps (blue, green, or white).
I have red LEDs I can sell if you want to try red.
Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

I've decided that I want to do some more research on pre-97 interior LED sets. Since I have a 2000, I'm limited to bench testing mostly.
That said, I'm looking for someone with a pre-97 and some photography skills that is interested in trying LED lights. I've sold a few sets of these and results have been generally positive, but I still have some kinks to work out and I don't have good photos just yet. For you, a free set of full interior lights with extras to try for the HVAC... I'll even send the different colors if you want to try them out and are willing to take pictures.
The photos I'd like are of the panels before and after the LEDs are installed. Areas of interest are the HVAC panel and Rocker switches. Clear, low light photography is a pita, so I'll ask for a clear nighttime photo of your rocker switches, HVAC, and transfer/transmission bezels with stock lights before I ship anything out. The goal is something that represents what they actually look like. See the link below to get an idea of what I'm looking for - these are pics of my 2000 gauge cluster in stock and various LED colors.
Otherwise, I want any feedback I can get on how things work. Do the lights fit snug, is light even, ease of install, etc.

Finally got around to installing mine. I have to order more since I bought an overhead console.
Sorry, the pictures were taken during the day. I HIGHLY recommend this seller and his products.

Reply sent via PM. I still have these light sets for anyone that's interested.
This has been a fun hobby for me, but I honestly don't have the time/motivation to give it the attention I'd like to. The Army can be demanding.
I'm getting out of the Army next summer, so I may do some more work on these sets next year. Until then I'll continue selling from my on-hand stock. I'm not sure if I'll continue after I sell that I have.

Lights update
I took my interior lights out due to a faulty wire or switch somewhere in my interior light circuit. All are working well, but the rear dome bulb was loose where the center portion mounts between the 'fuse' end caps. If anyone has issues like this or other issues, please let me know.
