Just curious... are all years of the 231 compatible with every XJ?

not sure on that. Some people say they have done that, some people say no.

I know 96-01 interchange easily. Not sure on prior years but I think they do interchange too.

But using one from different vehicle may have different input gear. So u would need to swap the input gears.

Cool, thanks. I have a 231 from my old 01 XJ, so I'll install the SYE on that and swap it into my 97.
