it's going to take either a detailed cage that ties in to the frame and probably the A pillars, or buy a bolt in cage and hope that works. posting on pirate4x4 is definitely not a good idea. cutting the roof off your jeep straight out the gate was a pretty bad idea as it is. if you got kids, please don't put them in there when you go for a cruise
Agree 100%. I'm not sure if you understand how a unibody chassis works but it doesn't work well when half of it is gone.

because what you've done so far definitely doesn't fly over there in the hardcore section. I doubt you'll get a reply at all, let alone a polite one. doesn't matter if you're wheeling it or not. just normal bouncing, speed bumps etc (or a bumpy beach) will cause it to bend. YOU NEED A CUSTOM CAGE DUDE! shouldn't have chopped it yet if you still planned on driving it. google search "jeep cherokee cage" and order an aftermarket one or go have one built. you really need something that ties into the A pillars, B pillars and frame though. and even aftermarket cages require assembly with a welder

you're not getting any useful feedback because no one would ever cut off that much of a perfectly good car without knowing what all they need to brace it. stop driving. put a cage in it asap. the frame is made of U channel 1/16" in most places it's not made to be used like that without support

would a full dom or chromoly cage do the trick? I apologize if I have ruffled feathers on your forum. No I am not a hardcore jeep guy - just a guy who moved to an island and thought it would be fun to have a 4x4 convertible as these are all over the island (without cages - so apparently everyone on the island is holding on to kamikaze roots) I bought the jeep how it was and didn't think there was much else to be done with it for the applications I intended to use it for. I have found a shop on the island to build me a cage. I am talking to him about what we could possibly do.

In the mean time is this something that would make everything better?

The rockhard cage is ok but its bolt in and a lot of money. It will be cheaper if you have a cage built locally or order a pre cut cage and have it welded in.

Exo's IMHO, they are just plain FUGLY!

For a really good inside cage you need to go with a custom made one by a shop who does them all the time on lots of different models. I have done this for many years as I use full body cars and want a close fit. On a door car I have used a swing out door bar for the last 15 yrs. (got harder to get into the cage without one. I took my XJ over to the shop that does them for him to look at and he had some suggestions for mounting points, frame strengthens.

One good thing the headliner (its new) comes out/in easy from the rear hatch when welding in the cage. I hope I never need one there old bones are brittle and I don't heal as quickly as I once did

I have made an appointment at a speed shop at the north end of the island for saturday. I am going to have him brace the jeep and then build me a custom cage for it. Is there any kind of material in particular I should stay away from in order to successfully do this? Due to this being an island chromoly is about $13 a foot for example. If anyone has specific instructions on what this guy should look to do please let me know - I am taking it to http://www.808speedshop.com as they had the best reputation on the island. I am hoping to escape this under $1500 but am really willing to pay what it will take to make the vehicle safe.

Will keep updated and provide pictures of the finished project.

I am hoping that by doing this the car will be safer and acceptable to just drive in. Once again I do not have any plans to be 4x4ing in it and just plan on using it to get my surf board to various beaches on the island.

I don't see any cages built on their site or bent tube.. just make sure they give you a 6 or 8 point cage. and don't pay for chromolly that's bukue bucks. tell them to use HREW

apparently they have made custom cages for alot of the 4x4 community on the island. They build cages for alot of hot rods and such primarily. Theres one guy there who said he would definitely be able to fabricate something. I will see if HREW is a possible scenario. DOM may be the only alternative to Chromoly however - will that still do the job?

DOM is the same as HREW, only supposedly more dent resistant because of the way it's formed. HREW has a seem on the back where it was rolled and welded and DOM doesn't or something like that..

either way. HREW is the cheapest and more than strong enough for what you're doing
