Why do they call it 4wd if only 2 wheels get power?
I was watching this YouTube video of a guy with monster tires on a Cherokee going through a mud hole and getting stuck it looks like he spent a gerzillion dollars on a lift kit and tires but he didn't have lockers.
Check out this video on YouTube:
I am very new to this so I have to ask ... Did some xj Cherokees come with lockers? About what percent?
And shouldn't the ones without lockers be called two wheel drive?

that jeep had 4 wheel you can tell by the front wheel that was spinning. I dont think that cherokee's had lockers from the factory but some guys on here will know the definite answer,
they did make 2 wheel and 4 wheel models though.

Technically when in 4wd all for wheels get 100% of the power available split between the wheels on each axel. Its a long technical explantation, so do some research on how a differential works and you will understand better, but the above statement is TRUE.

4wheel drive means you have the option to bring driving force to all 4 wheels.
a locker makes it so the tires on the axle move at the same speed.
which is not good for street
thats what stock axles are like so there street friendly,
hope i helped a little

Yes I know what a open diff. Is it means that the wheel that could help you the most dosent get the power meanwhile the one with the least traction spins and accomplishes nothing :-)
.
You say they run limited slip in the rear sometimes that is a good thing do they also offer it for the front?
.
I am not new to mechanics just 4wd Cherokees

you can have all the locker and big tires you want when you go into a hole that was made by a nother vechicle with bigger tires you gonna get stuck when you axles bottom out and your tire are off the ground theres now way you gonna get traction from water

All 4wd does is ALLOW all 4 wheels to get power, now the only one per axle that is spinning is the one with the least amount of resistance. This is because the inner tire in a turn goes slower than the outer tire so the outer tire gets the power so not to wear down on tires. Now this also means that if 1 tire is in the air then that one has the least amount of resistance so it will be the only tire that is spinning on that axle. A LSD will see this and distribute the power in an almost 60-40 ratio with the 40 being the one on the ground, this is why some people think they are weak.
A locker is kinda like 100-100 and is always on (not air lockers or ones that react to an increase in torque) But on ccorners the locker disenguages and allows for only the outside tire to get the power so you dont wear your tires.
A 3rd is the Spoll or mini spoll. That means both tires on the axle are always locked and will never disenguage. They are stronger than a locker but are really only used in offroad only vehicles because most dont need something that incredibly strong and on turns it will wear tires out

I had a spool in my street/strip truck but it was very unfriendly I replaced it with a trutrac posi unit
.
I want you guys to understand that I'm sort of poking fun at the concept of 4wheel drive because in most cases all 4 wheels are not getting power most of the time it's one in the front and one in the rear a grand total of 2
.
(joke) so this three wheeler could be called 4wd because 2 wheels are getting power all the time
bottom line I guess I will need to install a posi unit before I even think about lifting this jeep for bigger tires because I intend on having at least 3wd when I need it most
