For a 31" tire all I had to do was extend the bolt that holds the wheel on with a trailer shackle (flat metal 1" x 3" x 1/4" thick with a hole on each end). And remove the metal floor support.

Not on my '96 and I haven't seen one in the junkyard. I would have seen one if it was there because that's one thing I've been looking for. There just is not enough driver-accessible storage in the older models.

Not sure I follow on using the shackle to extend the bolt, could you explain a little more?

I use my XJ as a DD mainly for work so I needed storage for tools, etc. A friend took the shelves out of his work van and I got one to put in the cargo area. Mounts to roof rail with two L-brackets, solid as a rock. I moved the removeable dividers around a little to fit my needs and put everything I thought I might need neatly in it's own place (tow chain, straps, spare jack, saw, grinder, small tools, fluids, spotlight, tarp, hell I could keep going). I left the backing off of the top shelf so I could still see out the back. Thinking about some sort of netting as a backing to keep things up there in case of hard braking or collision. Any ideas there?

1996 is the bastard year for the XJ. It has some-or-none of 1997+ parts and harnesses. This overhead console is stock and is listed on the 'build sheet' from jeep.
Also has harnesses for dash speakers and footwell lights.

Tire mount is bar stock with a hole drilled in each end. Have to grind down one end close to hole to fit on body side. Bolt it to body and slide stock 'J' bolt through other end.
This picture is trailer shackles. They cost $2 each.

Gotcha now on the shackle, thanks. Will keep looking for the overhead console. Local pick n pull rotates stock pretty regularly, maybe I'll get lucky. Are you saying that a '97up will fit or just certain years?

My 96 Classic has the overhead console, it's not really that useful, a good place to store some extra sunglasses.

This is my Best, most Useful interior mod.

Use a piece of expanded metal bolted to the rack.

No need for a write up, all you need is the appropriate holesaw to whatever size "cup" your recessing into the console.

I'll post a picture later but Prime 4x4 makes a switch panel with 7 switches with LEDs in them and it even includes a harness for easy wiring. I'm definitely happy with the purchase
