Default Regearing suggestions

Hey guys, I've got a 30/44 that are beggin for their new gears to be installed!
I have 4.56 gears for the pair and full install kits to match... But I don't have a dial indicator, and I am hesitant to buy one.
Do I absolutely need this tool for the job?

Should I bother attempting gears? I have both axles out and stripped clean waiting for parts.

I was quoted $300 to have the carriers/pinions installed. No other work will be done to them.

Is that a fair price for that work? I'm giving them two empty axles, 2 pinions, and 2 complete carriers.

Buy a shop press from harbor freight for $150 and a used dial indicator form flea bay.... you are ahead, and can get some friends/ neighbors to pay you for a few small jobs

if youre not sure if you need a dial indicator to do the gears yourself, id recommend dropping the axles off at a shop.

If you want to try to half *** the jerb by not having all the tools you need, you should probably drop them off at a shop.

If you drop off a bare axle it's pretty cheap to get the gears done idk price I get mine done for beer money.plus then the blames off you if they blow up.

This, there is much, much more to installing gears properly than a dial indicator. I have well over 1000$ in tools only for differential installs. Probably closer to 1500$

The Harbor Freight dial indicators are perfectly serviceable and only $14.

If you wanna trust the investment inside your axles to a 14 dollar tool, go ahead.

I wouldn't that's for damn sure. I am pretty mechanically inclined I've done everything on all
My jeeps. Other then gears. Too much of an investment to mess with I take them to the pros.

Obviously there are lots of things that can go wrong when re-gearing.

Using a HF dial indicator isn't likely to be one of them.

I have bought several of them to build into jigs and fixtures. They all work fine.

I dxo it all the time, and run my own repair shop.....

It's what i started out with when I opened my shop, then as a deal on a nicer press came along I got it, and solt the chepo, the dial indicators I have are 1 snap on magnetic, and 2 HF ones with vice grips... no problems.

Also a good pull type fish scale is good to have for gears... used it all the time on Mack rear ends... pinion had to have less than 5 lbs of rotating force....

Thank you guys, I think I'll be taking them to the shop... I'd be pissed to throw away $500+ to be stuck on the freeway...give myself somebody else to blame haha. Don't suppose anybody here lives in NorCal and wants to help a brother out??

$300 for r & p install on 2 axle is very reasonable , let the pros do it . many shops have set up bearings they use before they press on the new permanet bearings on. because they know what they are doing to do the job easy & correctly.
