Default ZJ rear disc spacing issue.

Did a rear disc conversion on a '98 XJ. Used rear disc setup off a '95 ZJ. Swap went fine but noticed the drivers side disc actually is sitting further inboard than the passenger side. The passenger side looks to be the correct spacing from what I have observed on other pics, videos, etc. I ended up putting a cheapo 3mm (1/8") wheel spacer between the axle flange and brake rotor on the drivers side recently. it is better bit still not same distance from the backing plate like the passenger side is. Anyone noticed this before or have any idea why? Can anyone confirm that the passenger side is indeed the correct spacing?

Evidently there's a difference between the '95 ZJ rear disc unit and the recommended '96 '97 and '98 ones. See post #3 below.

That post doesn't really say that at all. rotors, calipers, hoses, pads, e-brake shoes are all the same from 94-98. I have yet to find someone say 96-98 back plates are different. Not saying they're not, but I haven't seen someone state they are. A friend of mine seems to think it could be the axle housing itself, slightly shorter on the drivers side. whether intentional or not it might not have been that big of a deal with the drum brakes. The swap was done a year ago and old parts scrapped, I didn't think to check them until now. Both ZJ backing plates were the same thickness. i didn't check the offset on the caliper mounts unfortunately.

So I just checked the spacing on my '96 with a ZJ conversion and like yours the drivers side is closer than the passenger side. Been that way since 2016 with no issues. Guess it's the nature of the beast. lol

thanks for checking earl. i am starting to think this is not just an issue on my ZJ rear disc swap.

https://youtu.be/JcbzFRM9ZTIcheck at 9:16, you see the gap between the rotor and dust shield is how it is suppose to be on a ZJ.
I am thinking the correct "fix" would be a spacer at the axle housing flange that goes on inbetween that and the ZJ backing plate. My spacer between the axle flange and rotor works, but gives the rim less axle hub to sit onto, if that makes any sense. It also has slightly less thread for the lug nuts, still acceptable but bearly. A fix might not be needed at all, if most swaps are already like this I have not heard of any reports of issues. maybe I am just being fussy....

Our illustrious internet source (hurry up Star Link) won't download the link you posted but I'll see it at some point in time.
Been a lot of the ZJ brake mods done over the years but no reports of any issues. Your not being fussy at all. Better safe than sorry.
