Default Rear Axle Question

Good afternoon,
I have 2000 XJ. I got my build sheet from Chrysler and it says I have the C 8.25 in it. Bought gears for the install in the rear and bought another D30 with 4.88's already in the front. Took the Jeep to the gear installer and he just called and said I have a D35 in there. So sometime before i got the Jeep somebody installed a D35.

My question is this, I can get a C 8.25 from the junkyard. Should it be just a straight swap on the rear end? I have about 5" of lift currently. I also had the drum brakes completely rebuilt 2 summers ago. Will any of that swap over to the C8.25? Do I need to get another driveshaft?

Thanks,
Josh

Can you post pics of the rear end? Also. What year/jeep did the 30 come out of? Is it low pinion or high pinion. I would not gear a LP 30 to 4.88. As far as the rear end question. Yes you can find a 97+ 8.25 and it will bolt right in. As for the drive shaft, do you have an SYE, you definitely should at 5" of lift. Either way. I doubt you will need a new driveshaft for the 8.25 at that lift height.

Yes the 97+ 8.25's were the 29 spline axles 96 down were not. You will also need new u-bolts for the 8.25 different size than the D-35.

yes, do snap a pic of your rear diff so we can all have a laugh at the gear installer. i'm sure no one would swap out an 8.25 for a crappy d35.

if your diff has a sort of square bottom, you definitely have the 8.25.

that pic is redundant.

for the untrained eye, the 8.25 looks like the d35 without knowing the sizes.
and that d35 is the old style with the screw plug. his would have the rubber plug anyway.

take a pic with your phone, it's that easy.

That goes to show you that some people will do really dumb things to their XJ's, I would have never thought that....a D35.

Don't believe your build sheet next time

That's strange that somebody would swap that in there. Atleast your gear installer told you before he tore the axle down. GL with finding an 8.25. I think you'll find the e brake might need some creativity when swapping axles. I've never done it, but that's what I've read.

I already picked up an 8.25 for 75 bucks. Not a 29 spline one but I will deal with that when I get there. I don't do any hardcore wheeling so I think I will be fine.
