OK----so i have my jeep, thats getting lifted 4.5 inches this summer, and its a 2000 so im most definitely going to have to get a sye happening. BUT as you know i need to hack n tap this baby.

Thats kinda a plus for me, less money involved, i suffer from EPS (empty pocket syndrom)

Im also trying to get this setup of getting a stock front driveshaft after i get the hack n tap. I have some questions about this and if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

From my understanding the front stock driveshaft in an xj has double cardan joint ... so would i be getting something like this

Yes you can use a front shaft with a hack and tap. And look to ironrockoffroad for yoir hack and tap. Or dirtbound. The first link is for a cv style joint, which is not a double cardan.

jakbob... so youre saying the 2nd link would work with the front stock ds? The description on that says to use it with a cv driveshaft. What im really asking is can i hook up a front stock ds to one of the sye... or do i need another part? i feel like im missing something how could a double cardan joint just bolt into a flange that is meant for a cv driveshaft

I got my SYE for my 89' NP242 from MIT Mechanically Inclined Technicians back in 2003. I saw a small ad in JP Magazine. It was an outputshaft replacement with a core return. I didn't have to hack-and-tap. The hardest part was getting the C-clips off the shaft because the C-clips did not have the little holes in the ends for the snap ring pliers. I did the replacement myself as I had access to a lift on base at the auto shop. Took me all day going real slow and careful. Again the longest part was trying to get those stinking C-clips off. The SYE is another one of those mods that is worth every penny. Make sure you use shims on your rear axle too.

Look at your front driveshaft where it connects to the transfer case. That is the kind of yolk you are hack and tapping onto the rear essentially. The front shaft is a double cardan not a constant velocity (cv) joint. Seriously, easiest route with everything you need besides the driveshaft would be the hack and tap off of dirtbound offroad or iron rock offroad. They have the correct yolk and everything. Even the bit for drilling the output shaft.

Theres no need for the sye in a 242. The bolt that holds the yolk on doesn't encounter any force. Your driveshaft would slip apart before that bolt broke.

by custom length does that mean i cant run the stock front ds setup?

I'm really not sure what you mean... I will certainly tell you that If I lift my jeep any higher than it is now (3") my 242 needs a sye to fix the drive shaft angle. Maybe I could come up with another way of getting a slip yoke on a double cardian set up but that doesn't make much sense to me
