Go with the Detroit Lockers first time out and know what you have. With your 33x12:50x15's you really need gears I had same setup as you with the 3.55's. I swapped to 4.10's when the lockers were installed and what a difference it made to mileage, power, improved shifting.
I'm also a rear first locker install and run in 2wd till 4 is needed. In the D30 you don't need a different center carrier when changing from 3.55' as the locker carrier takes of it.

I am fairly sure the Dana 30 carrier break is 3.55 or lower and 3.73 or higher... so yes he will need a new carrier. (or I just wasted money buying one LOL)
I agree if you can swing it go with a Detroit in back.
Right now I am 4.56 gears and welded locked (may throw a Lokka in for now) in back 8.25 29 spline (Axle came that way and mostly trail rig), I will eventually go with a Detroit Locker out back. Front is 4.56 gear and I am going with a Lokka locker, eventually I will go with an selectable E-Locker or selectable OX locker up front when finances can afford it.
My daughter has a Cherokee Trail Rig too... so when I am done with the Lokka's they will go in her jeep so it is not a waste to buy now.
Big thing with Lunch Box lockers is throttle control on the street, you don't want to gas it around corners, but coast. I had a Spartan in the back of my TJ.

Thanks everyone! After all this info, my own research and wheelin with good buddies this weekend ive decided to go with a detroit in the rear and talk to my local guy about costs of re-gearing. If im gopnna do the locker than i might as well regear if the price is reasonable. Happy wheelin! Yall should try and make it up to Alberta if ya can, good times!

I vote for a junkyard mopar trac-lok.. just picked one out a durango R/T at the junkyard for $150, I like clutch type lsd's just because they are better on road, and clutch rebuild kits are cheap for the factory units.

The Detroit soft locker is the best there is... Max strength... No having to mess with it, and no click click around turns... Just the squeal of your tires if you use to much gas.

After daily driving with a detroit for several years, I couldn't wait to swap to an ARB.
I know a lot of people that have done the same. Just depends on what you can live with and what you do with your jeep.

All Lunchbox style lockers are the same from what I can see. I have ran Lockright, Detroit and Ausi. My cuzin runs two spartains. They all operate the same and act the same. So I suppose it comes down to the preffered brand... Other than some coming with hardend crosspins ...

I've got a Detroit out back with a lock right up front.
