You have a high pinion dana 30. Look at your front axle from the side. Notice how the driveshaft seems to go into the upper portion. Later years of xj had a low pinion (less desirable).

Any advice on my idea for the rear, i can get a complete rear end off a 97 so that should have the 29 spline, i plan to re gear to 4.56 and im wondering what would be a good locker? I read good things about the Powertrax no slip, but I also read its not good for a manual transmission ?

I don't see how it would affect the transmission much. At least under normal driving conditions. I could see how it might wear the clutch due to the extra traction and effort required to get going but any type of driving that requires constant first gear starts would cause this kind of wear. Internally speaking though the standard gears in the trans shouldn't be affected at all.

It wouldn't affect the transmission but it may affect how the locker wears. The constant loading/unloading from shifting gears may "shock" the locker causing it to wear out faster, especially on pavement where traction is plentiful.

No reason for you to get a complete rear end, especially if you are going to get a locker anyway. Just grab the 29 spline axles, make sure that you get a full case locker for the 29 spline axles (97 and up) and you will be good to go.

on the rear, im not sure yet, I can swap the axles to a 29 spline, upgrade the carrier to 29 spline, add a locker which replaces the spider gears ? or the carrier too? not sure about that part yet. I have a friend who did my old dodge re gear who is going to do the install after i get everything, just need to narrow it down and order it all.
I found a rear end off a 97 for $200 that i can get tomorrow so that should have the 29 spline axles and carrier right ?
If i decided to just do the gear swap and add the locker later can i do that without pulling the gear again ?
I guess i need help figuring which locker to get.

That will work either way but a set of used axles would be cheaper for sure. The D30 is all you need a new carrier for and that's if you don't install a full case locker there , a manual is best and I think the OX is the cheapest manual.

For the rear I would install an Auto Locker not a LS the strongest ones are full case lockers like Detroit, Ox, etc.

Correct!

What I read was when shifting a manual transmission the locker would be confused with the load being suddenly lightened then put back on. It was on one of the reviews for the powertrax.
If I'm buying axles should I get new stronger axles or would a set of older ones from a auto yard be good enough still ?

So the Detroit Auto locker would be a good choice then it sounds like?

You should have the reverse rotation Dana 30 in the front, so yes. Double check just in case any PO did something weird.

Look at my post on this very thread that I made on 07-27-2016 09:00 PM.

You will be doing yourself a favor if you do some research. Lot's of great information here and almost everything you want or need to know has more than likely already been covered several times.

4.56 is fine/good for 35's. I'm on 6.5" and 35's in an '01. I drive it 6-10 hours to the trail loaded with gear, wheel/crawl the snot out of it with guys on 37-39's, and then drive it home. At 80mph on the freeway, I'm at about 3000 rpm, give or take. I have never found anything on or offroad that I have not been able to get up or over because of a lack of power/torque at 4.56.

If shopping for gear sets try Rustys Off Road they sell sets for the D30/Chy 8.25 with master install kits for under $500. Motive gears the same I have used for years in my race cars is what he sells.

A Detroit Locker (a full case) is the strongest/quietest locker made but costs the most also, that is why I suggested you look at others to get an idea on costs.
