Your power issues can be cured with re-gearing. Your choice of 4.88s sounds fine. You have a very nice locker in the rear. The Detroit's are rock solid. You don't need to spend big money for the front locker. Aussie, Lock-Right and others are lunch box lockers that work great. As long as your Cherokee is in 2wd you can't tell that the locker is even there. Put your Cherokee in 4wd and both axles are locked. When in 4wd (HIGHLY recommend doing that only in slippery conditions, whether on-road or off-road) your turning radius will increase significantly.
I run an Aussie lunch box locker in my front HP Dana 30 and a Lock Right lunch box locker in my rear Chrysler 8.25. These lockers have been GREAT with no issues.
Running a trail at The Cove Campground at Gore VA.

I have lunch boxes front and rear and they do pop crunch and carry on. Has a little more tendency to push in snow, sand, mud but I would not replace ether for a LSD any day of the week. If I had the money I would go selectable front and rear.

Hey Nolan, you asked about differential noise like popping. I know your Detroit in the rear does make noise (my sons does) but when you are in 2wd there is no power going to the front differential so the front auto locker (if that is what you are going to go with) will not be engaged. Just like the Detroit, a lunch box auto locker is only engaged when there is power (torque) engaging it. With an auto locker like an Aussie there will be clicking, not loud and no big deal. Back to the turning radius issue. When off roading in 4wd and you need to make a tight turn, say around a tree, you can pop out of 4wd to get the tighter turn then pop it back into 4wd. Granted this is easier with an electric or pneumatic locker. With my Cherokee I've got that option but can also disengage either the front or rear axle with my Atlas transfer case and hop around a tree that way.

I have been running a Lokka lunchbox in the front (D30) for a few months now and love it. It makes a clicking noise when turning in 2wd and I only hear it with the windows down and the radio off. I run 80/140 gear oil in it and it works great out 4wheeling. Lokka use to make the Aussie locker and their web is lokka.com. They have a sale on D30 lockers for 200.00. Dan

lunch box lockers are known to be noisy & break or wear out way sooner then you would expect them to,my local 4wd shop guy fixes and/ or replaces them all the time. detriots & e-lockers are top quality & last & last & last. i once used the same detroit in 3 different 9" rears over a 22 year period , never even needed a rebuild once.it got sold w/ my last cj 5 yrs ago & its still working fine today & its now 30 yrs old. $200 or $800 locker ? you get what you pay for. btw bought my current DL & E- locker for my 8.25 & hp 30 from jegs , they had the best prices any where.

My Detroit's came from Summit Racing there and Jegs are vendors I've been using for many years and God only knows the amount of money spent with them.
