electric fan upgrade
so i installed new electric fans on my 89 xj. one is a 14 inch dose about 3000 cfm and the other is a stock 97 up fan with 10 blades hooked up to a flex a lite fan controler. i have a rad from a 92 xj and a 195 tstat in. i also put a flow kooler water pump and new res bottle. the gauge in the jeep says its hits the red area then drops down then up then down. i put a new sensor in, in the back of the head but according the to gauge looks like im over heating but im not. i put a gauge in the highest spot of the radiator and watched the temp as i set the electric fans and that temp shows diff then what the one in the jeep says. if i was really overheating the cap would blow but it isnt. i dont know what to beleave or whats going on been like this for a year now. any suggestions?

Same happened to me.
I had the same wiggy temp problems. I spent the money and bought a VDO water temp gauge and sender. I believe it was about $50.00. The sending unit went into the same hole as stock.
The price bothered me at first. But it is accurate. After a few months I finally stopped checking the temps constantly.
Now if it isn't the gauge. then you may have a bad thermostat, or lots of air in the cooling system. I'm assuming though you have checked the thermostat and purged the cooling system of air.

I have been battiling overheating issues with my 90 for close to 3 mos. Then I solved the problem. After replacing everything like you,it sill didn't cool properly. After flushing, burping the system many times my brand new t stats and parts were getting crudded up by all the crap from the heater core. If you haven't ditched that heater control valve do it. First step in RAD replacement is set heater controls to high...That's where things went bad it was only after weeks of messing with the xj I finally figured it out. Don't spend any more $$$ till you are sure you have correct flow. NO electric fans on now and Temp gauge never is over 210,whether a 65 mph push uphill for 2+ hrs or wheeling all day at idle. good luck to ya

It's a 4 or 6 hour job, according to the book. I did my old MJ in 8 but I was working in a shop at the time & was working on it between jobs. You need to remove the lower duct work crap, on the passenger side.
It's not as bad as the 97+ XJ's. On those, you have to remove the entire dash.
