Talking Bolt-On Frame Stiffeners?

Just curious ... is there such a beast as bolt-on frame stiffeners?

Local shop wants to charge 800 to 1k to install the frame stiffeners I buy.

I really need to learn to weld.

I don't think there is such a thing because it really wouldn't help just by bolting it on. At least in my opinion.

Not sure that you can get something like that. You have a family member or a buddy that you would trust? Try offering them some cash to give you a hand.

Craigslist. Find a guy that does that kind of work on the side. If you prep it all (couple hours with a 4 1/2" grinder), then it should only be 1-2 hours for someone to weld them in. Prep it, use self tappers to attach them to the Jeep, drive to guy's house and have him burn them in, drive Jeep home. If you were closer to me, I would weld them out for $200 no problem. If you brought it to me prepped and you did the painting.

Maybe a muffler shop would burn them in, if you brought it in prepped?

a bolt on stiffener wont do much, just based off the limited amount of locations you could actually bolt it to on the unibody.

800 is way too much to weld those on if you are doing the prep work. i'd find a 4x4 shop.

Or an exhaust shop - the one by my house put in a new muffler for $30, including cutting my old one off. Great welds too

Do the prep yourself, it will save ~3 hours of labor roughly which should add-up.

That was a 4x4 shop, but they did the prep. All I need to do for the prep is get down to bare metal on the outside and bottom of the frame, or just where the weld locations are?

Just where the weld locations are.

Basically - mock everything up, bend it in shape (use a jack or something), mark where your welds are going to be with a paint pen or sharpie, grind to bare metal, and take everything to the exhaust shop to have them weld them up

depends on how many bolts you use

are they just middle frame stiffeners? what brand are they? does this involve modifying to fit around stock control arms?

do your own prep work. log on to your local chapter section and post up $200 for someone to weld them. this is the kind of work I'd knock out on a weekend for someone, anyone really. Money talks just make sure whoever it is actually knows how to weld.

Geeze. For $800 you could buy a pretty rad welding setup with everything you could ever need.

No time like the present to learn a new skill.

$800 + another $300 or so will get you my setup. Barely. Just saying. My welding setup isn't even that amazing, definitely not rad.

185 amp Hobart mig welder, one tank of gas, welding shield, jacket, gloves, and a roll of wire. Easily $1100.
