IIRC they just pop in. Sometimes you gotta use some lube.
Looking on Amazon at the reviews of the daystar bump stops it seams there are 2 different widths and the Amazon garage it's confused on which fit what year.

Years ago, when I built my first XJ, I ran into a similar problem. Without the use of spacers or aftermarket wheels, the only option you have is to add bumpstops to keep the tires from rubbing. I know you said wheels were financially out of the question but, just so you know, you can get 4 D windows or 4 soft 8's shipped to your door for $198 and some change from Summit.
