ratio and locker question
Hello everyone I have been adding a bunch of mods to my 01 xj and in the rear of my dana 35 c clip I have the stock trac lock or LMS with 307 gears.I purchased 456 gears to match the front and was wondering if my stock LMS will work with the numerically higher carrier?I dropped around 2500 for the front so i am trying to save myself some money in the rear. Please help i cannot find any info on here.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

No. A limited slip carrier wouldn't work with a set of standard gears. You'll have to get a different carrier and a locker or a set of thick cut gears (If they make them) for your D35 to retain the limited slip carrier.
Open on the left, LSD on the right.

So, I agree, I'd suggest that you not spend a dime on the 35 but I think it's too late.

The 2500 hundred comes from the super d30 kit with the arb and chromolly axles and steering convertion, new ball joints all way round, hubs, and gears with install kit and other misc.Thats where the 2500 comes in.Its also my everday driver.Time will come when I throw a bigger set of axles on.I know the carrier is 3.55 and up was just seeing if the 3.07 LMS will work with 4.56 and the diff carrier.Already know I should swapped it out but decided on this.relax and thanks for all the input. Also didnt wanna spend the money on the swap for a 44 or 60 this year but still wanted to be all locked up for now without WASTING a buch of money on the d35.hence me saying trying to save money.

Show us the 44 then - options
Hello folks,
I have heard, and seen the reasoning behind both sides of the argument of not putting too much cash into the OEM housings.
It would be great to put opinions aside and a posting from any members showing the merits AND price with vendors for gearing down and locking a stocker or swapping in a 44.
This would be of great interest to many of us I'm sure!!
Thank you.

No I probably put it aside for somewhere to start when building another one.Better than having a stock d30.If i would have bought a d44 I would of put prolly twice that much into it.First gotta buy the housing and eveything else to go with it,did'nt have that kinda cash this year(new baby)or else I would loved to go bigger so i would not need to do it again. Not all of us can go big and bad right away, have to start somewhere. Also I am guessing that it will not work.to my >>? from before.

You could have bought a custom 44 with an arb and what ever ratio you wanted with alloy shafts for 3 or 4 hundred more than you spent on your D/30. I built my D/30 with an E-locker, 4.88 gears and 30 spline alloy shafts with master install kit and aftermarket pinion yolk, and a Rigid diff cover for 16 hundred and some change.

the 4.56's need a carrier that has the 3.55+ break to fit the gears, with that it replaces the LS diff carrier... so unless you buy/bought a 3.55 + LS your loosing the LS...
I personally would find a 8.25 and re-gear that for a good cheap and simple upgrade. or an 8.8 and call it a day.
With all that being said. I swapped D44's F+R, re-geared/locked/long-arm/crossover steering and new front drive-line for $2500. That's a lot of money for a D30! It sounds like the money was well spent for you, and thats good! time/convenience is a big deal... If your not going to run bigger then 35's there is no need for bigger then the D30, alloys and good U-joints will keep it together pretty well, I would drop the D35 before it costs more then its worth.... (which is nothing)

the dana 35 has a 3.07/3.55 break, as in if you have 3.55 gears you can go up from there, if you have the 3.07 gears you will need a new carrier to support numerically higher gears
you dont need special gears to work with your traclok, same/same for open/LSD in the 35 at least, i converted my LSD 35 from 3.55 gears to 4.11, ended up ditching the traclok for a truetrack but that was by choice.
the dana 30 has the 3.55/3.73 break, 3.55 is the most you can go on the stock 3.55 and lower 30 carrier. if you want to go up in number from 3.55 you need a new D30 3.73+ carrier i needed a new front D30 carrier to accept my 4.11 gears
