Green laning is using old byways (tracks/lanes)
Obviously not maintained by highways people so often overgrown and serious mud and natural obstacles.
Similar to your wheeling but we don't have such vast areas. Of land to play with.

We've got a few good green lanes on the Isle of Wight, have to admit it's a load of fun but my XJ is a general workhorse, so it's not modified in any way (just adds to the challenge of off-roading!)
While I'm here, what do you guys recommend to reduce the pretty serious spray thrown up and over the 'screen when on-road? The puddles only have to be a few centimetres deep - I've thought about heavy-duty mudflaps in front of the front wheels. I can't be the only one frustrated by this?

You could get something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/bhp/jeep-fender-flares
Some people use garden edging to make their own fender flares.

Rockhead, thanks for the link, but I reckon the spray comes up over the front. It's a bit like in the 70's when the Mini Coopers were rallied, they fitted flaps in front of the front wheels.

I very much know what you mean, I've experienced that quite a few times. Here's a link to my "You Tube" page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP9...2fYaImSUBFTZ8w
The video "4 Potts Mountain Jeep Trail" has this phenomenon in it. "3 Potts Mountain Jeep Trail" is fun to watch also, well, for me anyway. Hope you enjoy them, best viewed with headphones turned up. (:
