owning a Cherokee just isn't feasible. and in fact may be fiscally irresponsible in most cases. but you gotta pay to play
if you don't need a Cherokee or you don't wheel often, I would get rid of it for a more economical and safe car. hell if you're 1994 or older you don't even have an air bag!
My current XJ I bought for 1950. I have close to 5 grand total invested in it between maintenance, repairs, and upgrades(the biggest having been the new lift and SYE). I DD it. I drove 22k miles in the year that I have owned it and fixed it up. Is it the most economical thing in the world? No, but it sure beats driving a cobalt.

I think you are probably trolling, but the simple fact is that for most of us the xj is more than transportation to and from. Its really a lifestyle vehicle. I need the 4x4 and the capacity of the vehicle and i have a blast working on and modifying the crap out of it.

I know guys who have dedicated trail yjs with over 15k invested, but i dont think anyone gets into jeeping expecting to get their money back. I knew from the start that this wasnt going to be cheap or quick, but decided to do it because I want to build my dream rig and have been dreaming about the cherokee since i was 15.

Nope ten bucks. I got the xj for free. Traded a winch I got for free to get it running. (Needed a trans) scored a free set of 35's. Free 3.5 lift. And spent $10 on sawzall blades.

Nope. Not trolling. Cherokees are rarely economical and comfortable. I know we're all enthusiasts here but I drive a Honda every day. the guy was asking if he should ditch the XJ. I say hell yeah get rid of it.

I certainly appreciate all the replies to the original post, guys. If I get enough info, I may try to graph it and get some averages (yes, I'm a bit of a nerd). ALSO, just to clarify, I bought this truck to learn and expected to work on it a lot, though I didn't quite understand what 16 years of New England winters would do to the truck. Plus, I beat the **** out of it! All in all, I did all the work myself, learned drum brakes, how to weld, basic engine and driveline repairs, etc, all very valuable in the long run. Not to mention the tools I picked up. I did pay ~$2000 for shop repairs; in two instances I was stranded hundreds of miles from home and in the third instance I was just sick of working on it. I don't regret the money I've spent, just wondering if there's something out there on average that is just as capable but less costly. Or maybe I just got a bad apple.

Also, for comparisons sake, my second car is an '08 Nissan 350Z which costs $0.10 per mile; only major maintenance costs have been two sets of tires.

In THIS Jeep I'll be around 20-25k total including purchase after the stroker and all that entails. I have put 160,000 miles on it and It I think (have seen) it is better in almost every situation than a 40,000$-45,000 Rubicon and after this motor etc, should last as long. Maintenance does not magically stop because you have a new vehicle. My wifes truck (2006 Toyota Tacoma racing edition) cost her about the same up front new and still has maintenance. ( Much more expensive maintenance) While it is nice, I would not trade my XJ for it.

My stock xj only has me at about 1500 total and has not had an issue.

Worth mentioning I THINK I'm almost done with this XJ... Should lighten my cost per mile over the next 200k.

Jesus Christ man. You're making me feel way better about my gross Cherokee spending habits. And I thought mine was way over the top
