Default What Jeep to buy??

Well i looked at a 1995 Cherokee Laredo today and to be honest i know nothing about Jeeps at all. I posted in the intro section and in the tech section (noisy hub).

Basically what im asking is what in you guys/girls opinions are the best Jeeps (NOT WRANGLERS) to buy, Years/Body style/Trim. I only have 2000-2500 to spend and in NJ/NY/CT im finding decent deals on ones. I like the look of the Grand Cherokees because well they look newer, but the Cherokee XJ?? (boxy style) Looks cool too.

I dont plan on doing any serious off roading or anything crazy. I would like to put a set of American Racing style rims on (the gloss black ones with the red stripe) and a nice M/T treat pattern. And maybe a lift kit if it doesnt cost too much money. I can pretty much do everything in my garage.

Thanks for you opinions and helping me choose

+1 for the xj dont have pics of mine sense the lift. had it 3 weeks and have played with it for the past 2 and must say the 3in lift and the crap tires i got. its still does good. i have gotten stock once and that was b/c the mud hole was deeper then i thought.

my brake down

jeep 675 (running had a bad cluch)
lift 350 ish (3in with quck Ds, and a 2.2 steer asst)
tries 503 (235x75x15)
ujoints 80
tune up 150ish (cap&rotor, wires,plug, oil&filter)
gear oil 50

1808 is what i put in mine before i put it on the road and im loving it more and more.

still have some issues that need to be taken care of. but that was my fault i think so

Another vote for the '91-'96 4'0L H.O. XJ!

'97 and later XJ's are awesome too, but they're still a little bit more pricey.

IMAO- The V8's in "Grands" are cool if you do alot of towing and stuff, but the 4.0L I6 is a MUCH better motor!!!
(bet i got somebody pretty heated with that comment...)
5 million straight 6's out there can't be wrong, ya know?

The 6 isnt much better at mileage than the V8 in a grand..
Watch all your local classifieds , free papers etc. Right now Grands are going cheaper than XJs around here.
A BB (budget boost) lift 2" for a grand or cherokee is under $200.

for the price you are looking at, you are going to find a grand in better shape. and, if you look hard, you can lift the grand for about 10 bucks.

when i had my 93 zj (grand) i searched and searched and searched and found 2" spacers from terraflex for like 2 bucks each or something. it is alot cheaper to lift a grand upto 3" then it is an xj but from then on its probably the same as the I6 grand is set up almost identical to the xj. same front and back uses coil springs also.

gas mileage wise, my 93 zj got better gasmileage then my 87 xj and hte same as my 95 2x4 xj and the grand was fulltime 4x4.

i would say find a good xj for around 2k and dump the extra 1k in modding it to get started you'll have an awesome truck
