Question Towing with an 1998 Cherokee

Hi guys I'm new to the forums. I've had my 98 Xj since August and I love it. My question is can a tow a Comanche with my Cherokee? I have access to a car dolly and a car trailer what one would be better? I'm towing it a little over 100 miles. My xj is a 4.0 automatic (19k miles on the tranny) with the factory class 3 tow package and a crysler 8.25 rear end

Ps: I'm buying the Comanche (mj) off a buddy for $225

I towed my 94 Cherokee with my 99. Pulled it in 3 at 60-65 for an hour. Used a dolley
Stopping distance tripled leave lots of room drift to a stop if possible.
I would use the car trailer if available.

Im not a fan of a car dolly in most cases. But depending on how much the car trailer weighs it may be a better option.

You're going to have less tongue weight with the car dolly vs the trailer (how much depends on the weight distribution of how its loaded on the trailer)

Either way if you're only towing for 100 miles you should be ok, just give yourself plenty of room to stop.

Depends on what the trailer and the mj weight.Legally you can pull up to 5k and you will need trailer brakes if your towing any car because of the weight. The other thing is the xjs short wheel base while towing can get ugly fast if you try to drive too fast.

Keep it in 3, not Drive. You'll build up less heat in the transmission.

And take it easy! Lots of stopping distance, ZERO tailgating. I mean, leave 3 or 4 seconds. That's a LOT more than most people are willing to tolerate. Think about it - it's only 3 or 4 seconds!!!!! Yet most people cannot stand to be that far back from another vehicle. They think they are going too slow (even if they are doing the exact same speed), and they worry that someone will cut in front of them.

So what if they do? You just back off again. You'll get there a whopping 10 or 20 minutes later than if you had followed more closely, IF THAT MUCH.

On a hundred mile trip, what does that matter? Get there in one piece! That's what matters!

If the trailer has brakes be sure and wire up the XJ for them to work. Then check operation before you leave so you have time to fix anything not working properly.

I did pull my 18' all steel car hauler with our RZR on it several times but the trailer does have surge brakes on both axles.

As Mark suggested be very careful with the braking and how you load the MJ on the trailer as to the weight load on the hitch not being to heavy or light.

Nice find for $200 I always liked them and they look so nice when finished.
