Default t-case fluid

i have a 89 Cherokee sport. I just put the t-case in and was wondering about the fluid. Some say it is shared with the tranny, but when i looked on the net it showed putting it in the t-case. Thanks for the help, im ready to drive this piece.

The 242 in my Grand uses ATF+4. It doesn't share fluid with the trans. the transfer case has its own supply. I think the 231 uses the ATF+4 also.

but I dont think itll hurt it any, the trans would be a different story though.

My owners manual actually calls for ATF+3 for the transmission and the transfer case. But since that is impossible to find, ATF+4 is used.

I've read you don't want to put ATF4 in there. You want to use Dex III. I just drained and filled my 231 and AW4. That's what I put in there.

i just had my transfer case replaced and it has ATF+4 in there now. Chrysler vehicles use DexIII for older vehicles, and the newer vehicles use ATF+3. since i can't find ATF+3 anywhere near me, the ATF+4 is supposed to be the better replacement fluid. supposed to be cleaner and not wear out as fast. mine is the NP231, and in my manual it says that it can use DexIII, ATF+3, or similar fluid. ATF+4 is just a cleaner more high quality fluid, and if you go to a dealership, that is most likely what they are going to put in your t-case and transmission these days.

Completely different transmission and requirements....

You have a Chryco tranny... the ATF+4 is correct for you.

The AW-4 isn't a Chryco tranny... and Dex III is correct for it...

But the T-case requirements are VERY different...So it doesn't matter.
