Redoing 2001 Cherokee Headliner
So my stock headliner is falling down and I wanted to take it down and reupholster it. I was wondering if I should use headliner material? Will it make a difference if I use regular fabric?

I done my 2000 last winter and it really was a breeze to do. I looked at fabric and material everywhere and ended up using a grey Felt Material from the local fabric shop. And it worked great, Goes in easy and it does not have that PIA Foam on the back to deal with.. Use the 3M Spray adh. And fyi, On my 2000 I used 2-1/2 cans of it..

Okay, another question: What is the backing made of?
The reason I ask is I found a "How to" and the guy recomends adding a fiberglass resin to the backing to give it a better surface to stick to...

your headliner is a fiberglass resin material.
Just remove the old headliner, take like a bbq grill wire brush and make sure all of the foam particles are off the headliner, get headliner material line it up, then fold it in half spray glue on the headliner board, then on the headliner. Put it on pat it down to make sure it is all on there nice and tight. some people have used a small paint roller with a really thick roller on it. now fold the other half over and do the same thing! let it dry over night, then throw it up! after you cut the necessary holes in the material.
It is that simple.
the problem with fabric is that the glue shows thru the material...
btw headliner fabric can be found at joanns
plan on about 6" long on each end to account for the curves in the headliner board

Alright, I was thinking about using a type of vinyl so it would be waterproof and I would be able to wipe in down to clean it. Would this require a different type of glue?

This is what I used when I did mine a few months ago. Its pretty cheap. It has the foam backing so the glue wont bleed through like it will with regular fabric. Vinyl would be be cool though.

Just re-upholsterer mine, Took about 2 hours and 3 cans of head liner spray adhesive from 3M , I bought 3 yards of felt from a fabric shop for like $15. Easy stuff and it looks much better.
