I bought a winch for my xj that looks exactly like that only it's the 6000. Brought it to a mechanic and he said my motor was bad. Even still I guess it's a 100$ fix

Motors can be had for right at 80 bucks.

Very rarely have I seen a bad winch motor. Usually nasty planetary gear sets and bad solenoids or wiring. Heavy duty electric motors like that are pretty hard to kill unless they've been seriously overheated.

Either solenoids or wiring/connection. You should at least hear the solenoids clicking.

Could be the remote... I'd start testing things with a meter.

I'll give ya $50 for it.

Here's a wiring diagram for the whole thing.

That switch was added by a previous owner.

The white wire from the remote should be hooked to the same post as the wire going to the battery. Is that black wire going to the battery?

Alright. Next I'd jumper the terminals on the solenoid and see if it works. Do you have a volt meter?

Use a jumper wire to jump from the battery wire to the green wire.

(Make sure the winch is on free-spool while you're doing all this. Don't want to lose a finger.)

You should still be hearing the solenoids click without the winch hooked up.

They should be oriented just like the diagram shows.

Do you have the winch motor grounded?
