My rear main seal is leaking really bad on my 2000 xj. Lucky for me this is the first leak. So I wanna get the seal replacement as soon as possible I got the new seal today but was wondering if anyone else on here has done this job and could possible give me a tools list that im gonna need for this job.

It's not as bad as you may think it is. You need to drain your oil and get your pan down. I would take your starter off top for more room.. It's only 3 bolts anyways. Take the cap off the main bearing and set it aside. Take the bottom piece of the seal out. Your going to have to get creative to get the top part of the seal out. You can use a pick or something of that nature to push it up around and out. Same thing goes for installing it.

I think the pan bolts are 10 or 12mm. For some reason I want to say the bolts on the the cap are 15mm but it's been a while and I could be wrong. You probably won't be able to take the pan all the way out because it will get hung up on the sump. But that's okay. You can get to it still.

When I did one it was on a zj. I'm pretty positive it is the same thing.

Something else to note. If your jeep is lifted/going on an actual car lift you will have better luck getting the oil pan down. If your doing it on the ground you will probably have to undo one of the motor mounts to push the motor up a tad to give more room to get the pan out.

First and foremost, determine if it actually is your rear main that's leaking. It could be your oil filter adapter or valve cover leaking, dripping down and mimicking a rear main seal leak. So look above first before you do more work than you need to

When in replaced the rear main in my zj it didn't solve my oil issues. Come to find out the vc bolts were so loose you could take the bolts out by hand. Lol but it was good practice
