Well my newest Jeep I just got a few weeks ago has quite a few problems. It is a 94 Cherokee Sport with selectrac and a Chrysler 8.25 that is about all that is good about it.
The engine needs to be rebuilt with a loud knocking and 210,000miles on it, the drivers windo doesnt woork and the lazy guy never even tried to just push the window back up and it rained in it for several months because it sat for several months, not all the window controls have buttons, the pass side door handle doesn't work, some rust(no where near the extensive rust my 92 has which is good) and when the jeep ran it was used to transport a ton of kids and a ton of dogs! Seriously the PO ran a dog grooming store and there had to be hundreds of dogs that were transported in this thing, with the dogs and the rain combined it stinks to high heaven!
Oh another good thing is it has 4 brand new Toyo Open Country tires(stock size)
But I can't complain because I got it from the guy for only $300.00 but I have a lot of work to do...

Well, the PO took out the washer fluid reservoir and pumps in my 99 and didn't install a new one (I installed the under-the-hood setup from an older XJ), left the horn unplugged which I found out when someone darn near rammed me on the way home, the latches all stuck because they'd never been greased, zero brake pads left, a bad coolant sensor and fan clutch, oh, and a lighter with a flame so large it could be used for welding and a straw. Oh, and a couple dollars worth of change in the ashtray which I used to pay for power washing the undercarriage. And a rap CD in the player.

Don't feel so bad about that stuff now though, after reading all this, at least the powertrain and axles are good, no rust, clean interior, good wiring and no inappropriate welding (that I've found yet).

to name a few... all of the floors where gone my wife got in on the passangers side and her foot went throught the floor. you could see the road. she was pleased. i call it the rust monster now. even found a sticker that fits the bill.

it had a bad front drive shaft u joint that he told me about only because up to 15mph it banged around. i went to replace it. when i jacked up the driver side just enough to get the tire off fluid ran out the other end. not knowin what other damage there was inside i just replaced the whole front axle.
i got one for $100 with 60,000 miles on it. after i got that on as i put the wheele on there was quite a bit of play in it now i need a wheel bearing.
the windshield leaks and i think the rear end is going too.

oh well i got a crash corse on jeep repair right from the git.

i must say that this darn xj is the easiest thing to work on.

i drunk monkey can do it.

i love my jeep

When The first time i got my jeep I found some used clothes, cans of beer, cigarettes and empty lighters...
Seems like the previous owner loves to drink and smoke inside the jeep...

when i first got my jeep i found lots of mustard and mayonaisse packets from bojangles, a spork, some glow in the dark stars, and there is a fishing lure stuck in between the dash and windsheild which i can't get out unless i take out the entire dash, the drivers door leaks in rain and in car washes, and most of the weather stripping in the doors are rotted away. some weird red stains on the rear seats, and he had cut a "cupholder" out of a fiberglass sign and bolted it to the console lid, and the headliner is in dier (sp?) need of replacement. thats about it, i think

Default Our "new" '96 XJ Sport 4x4

Just bought a one-owner 96 XJ Sport. 4.0 timing chain let loose four years ago and was repaired by a dealer along with the water pump, oil pump, etc. That was at 153K miles, now it has 163K miles. Seems it spent the last three years at the Deer Lease being driven 3-4 times a year.

PO left me a hole in the side where he backed into a fence row, no radio (other than the one laying in the back), V E R Y bad tires, non-working gauges, cracked windshield, minor dents. It does have a hard mounted corded mobile phone mounted in it from about 1997. Too bad it is outdated technology! There are loose wires all under the dash and a small pushbutton momentary switch hanging loose beneath the dash. Haven't gotten it to do anything yet, maybe it is the ejection seat prototype...

All in all, from the description of the other purchases in this thread, I got a decent vehicle.

Needs A/C work, radio, SelecTrac is iffy, Tach, Speedo and Fuel gauges, interior work, minor body work and refresh the paint. Hmmm, that seems doable... Lol

Not too bad for daughter's first vehicle.

What an awesome thread.

Ive had 3 Cherokees (first two rusted so bad they wouldnt pass inspection) so here goes:

In my 89 Pioneer I found:
1. Oil rag tucked into a corner under the hood
2. silver ring with a stylized elephant, in the rear ashtray
3. some peanuts under the front seats

In my 93 Country, I found:
1. An early telephone jack-type thing, prob to hook up a cell phone thru the radio.
2. The remote locks fuse was pulled out, and when I put a fuse in I realized it was done deliberately because they were stuck in a repeat mode. Discovered that the rear passenger door button (that gets pressed when u shut the door) was rusted and causing a short. I disconnected it, and got my remote locks back.
3. a 1/8" thick layer of nicotine over the entire interior. I bought the car from the previous owner's widow. He apparently died from lung cancer the year before. Go figure.
4. Semen stains on the front passenger seat!!!!!
5. At least 50 old receipts stuffed under the front seat.
6. The engine was down almost 4 quarts of oil. No ****. Nothing but a bit of sludge at the end of the dipstick.
7. Busted neutral safety switch.

In my 98 Classic I found:
1. A Maroon 5 CD in the player
2. An aftermarket sunroof that tends to leak if not shut exactly the way it wants to be shut.
3. Mechanics markings, with a date, on the rear differential that makes me wonder what the hell it needed to be worked on for.
4. A strange issue with loss of compression in one cylinder that would come and go. Finally had the top end rebuilt, never gave me another problem.
5. Car had been driven by a 19 year old girl. Cute, young, and dumb. I negotiated the sale with her mother. Dad was living out of state with his former secretary, I talked to him on the phone once. *******. But Mom was VERY cute for a woman in her late 40s,and very clearly dealing with esteem issues... she and I flirted up a storm during the sale process.

when i bought my 90 xj laredo, i thought i found myself a great deal with nothing more needed than an IAC, valve cover gasket, and a headliner. i now wish that i knew where the P.O. lived so i could go to his front door and leave the engine that died on me 2 months later on his doorstep. also, found about a nice little hole in the floor behind the front passenger seat that was about a foot in diameter and i didn't know about untill the carpet caught on fire .... lets see, oh ya he left me a headunit that was on crack, like when you pushed the pause button it would turn off, the volume would only turn down unless you held the next button while you turned it up, 4 speakers that looked like they had been dipped in a pit of acid, a full ashtray that spilled everywhere (yummy), and to top it all off, it needed new tires. greatest 1300 i've ever spent in my life

lol, since my chopped 85 xj is my first rig i actually very pleased. i spent $650 on it. and it runs great, plus the 4wd works... but i had to change the water pump and knew the oil pan gasket was leaking. no big deal until i leave for work at 4:am to see a pool of oil under her. i stole the wifes pt cruiser. when i got home and chased the leak, i found a gallon milk jug full of used oil under the spare tire. that had melted on our 107 degree day we had here. yay.
theres also the radio, and a multi sound horn/ pa system both wired straight to the battery.
however. i cant wait for the rain to start to see how much my ragtop leaks

Today I found [after having my XJ for four months or so] that someone had installed an auxiliary power point way under the dash that I'd never noticed. I'd been using the cigarette lighter for accessories, and had to keep unplugging them to use the lighter.

The best thing the previous owners left was a very long hat pin and two fondue forks. I couldn't understand why, even after my father said, "Oh, they didn't want the smell on their hands." If you - like me - still didn't get it, then you weren't a child of the 60s and 70s.
