But the head isn't broken yet. What I am trying to figure out is if the head cracking is actually a statistically big deal, or if we just see a lot of it because when people need help they come to the forum, and therefore are more predisposed to thinking its a problem with the majority of 00-01 XJs.

i never offer or pay what a sellers asking price is . like i said budget the $500 to change the head if it scares you so much.

personally i think too many make too big a deal out of it. i'll bet half the people saying stay away are only repeating what they read on the internet and have no first hand experience with the possible problem. tons of them still out there as daily drivers that have never cracked a head. now thats not saying there wasn't a batch that must have had an issue since they updated the design with the tupy but i think the issue is over blown a bit..

if its a clean 5 speed and ya like everything else about it then buy it.

yup, see, now I am thinking I should get the '01 and just replace the head. It depends on what the coolant looks like, if its brown, I may still pass on it, because it could be that there is bearing problems already, due to it running four years on a cracked head. But if its clean... I may get it. Like what abodyjoe and EvstaG said, this may not be such a big problem, and even if it is, I can just swap out the head and then not worry about it. That is only if I know the engine is not already damaged.

Problem is... seller is asking 8500 due to a lot of aftermarket suspension mods. I like the mods, but cant justify 8500. I could maybe justify 5500. I doubt he'll go that low considering his starting point.

I would say that the stats are high. They all were made of the same casting. Some didn't magically go through a differrent production method. It wouldn't scare me, I'm just trying to say that the head cracking is a viable issue and more then likely it will Crack

Of course you don't pay what the seller is asking. But for an 01, woukd you offer the same if it were a 99? No because you still have to budget 500 more dollars for the 01

Haha I wouldn't even justify 4k!! There are plenty of clean xjs around. Alot are cleaner slates then some with heavy mods already. Shop around and be patient. A nice one will pop up at a better price.

A '97 should have the 0630 head. No XJs before 2000 came with the 0331. The 0630 does not crack frequently.
im saving my 97 as backup, storage for my good 630! it actually runs quieter than the 2000 and owes me nothing. id swap engine,
. if odo is honest its about 90000,good oil pressure.
these motors seem to hold oil pressure at hi miles better than others ive known,(fords).
