the clearcoat on my xj is completly peeled off the hood and above my fenders, i was thinking about sanding the clearcoat off the entire truck, my color is green, would this leave me with a flatish green? any suggestions/advice would be great

When using base/clear combos to paint cars, which is pretty much the only way they go these days, the base coat lays flat, no real gloss. The shine comes completely from the clearcoat. Even if you buff out the basecoat, you'll never be able to get it look like the rest of the car. It's nothing like the single stage paints like urethanes or enamels where you lay the paint down and buff the shine up.

Also, especially factory paint jobs, the amount of basecoat is as minimal as they can get away with. If you attempt to do what you are thinking to do, there is a real probability that you will sand and/or buff the paint right off of the car.

Unfortunately, the only real way to rectify the issue is to repaint the car.

I have peeling clearcoat on my roof and the top of one fender also. The base coat that's exposed is faded, but intact. Is there any chance it would be possible to sand off the rest of the clear on those areas and then re-spray just the clear itself? I'm concerned about the color not matching 100% if I had them repainted, on other cars where I've had only certain panels repainted they never matched the rest of the car perfectly. I know a good painter could do a blend into the surrounding panels but I'm guessing that could get expensive.

Im in the same situation, but i was considering sanding down the clear coat on the whole truck and just leaving it flat green, my only concern is that when sanding the clearcoat that i sand the base coat off too on accident
