Painting an xj
So I was just wondering... Are there any good alternatives to taking my XJ into a shop to get it painted? I have heard some friends discuss using some type of spray paint, but I was concernded with the durability of that. Any ideas? And price range? Thanks in advance.

If you mean a profession type job then you might try somebody on craigslist. Of course you're taking your chances.
If you don't mind doing a hack I've had good luck with Rustolium spare cans. About 10-12 cans will do it and it's durable. Just lightly sand first.

I painted an old car before I sold it with the rustoleum roll on paint. I buffed the roller marks out with a buffer, rolled some clear on it. It turned out much better than expected and Ill probably go this route again with my stock jeep. Check it out on google... lots of people have success with it.
only cost besides paint was orbital sander pads, acetone and tape.

I spray painted my Jeep flat black for under $50 including the sander/grinder I needed to get the old paint off.
You will want to buy the spray paint can ergonomic adapter so that you can spray from the cans more easily.....it may cost 10-20$ but well worth it!

I sprayed my hood, cowl and header panel with black plastidip last year as an experiment to see how well it would tolerate the Texas heat over the summer. Still looks good and not peeling anywhere. Still thinking this is probably the way I'll go.

The key to plastidip is the coats you want 5 to 7 and as long as you don't do them dry or super wet its good to go.And you can dip over over later on if you want a different color. But if you do that you should stay in the same color range light or dark.

I thought plastidip peels off? Seems like if you take it wheeling/mudding after trees and the pressure wash it would just come right off. Does it not peel that easily? I've been debating painting my Jeep as well and didn't think plastidip would last, maybe I'm wrong tho. And isn't it like $10/can?

It runs from $6 to $10 per aerosol can at Lowes, depending on the product, which is what makes it more cost effective to buy it by the gallon and use a sprayer if you're doing large projects. Also, like regular spray paint, it will come out streaked and just look like crap on large areas if you have sub-optimal conditions/technique. Have a look at Dipyourcar.com

If your doing a whole jeep i would spend the money and get a car kit from dip your car.You get gallon cans and a paint sprayer that will look a lot better in the end and faster to do.
