Default Opinions please

A friend of mine at work has a 1989 Cherokee Limited for sale. It's a 4.0L with an automatic and 160,000 miles. It's in pretty good shape. No body damage, just faded paint. The only problem seems to be the transfer case. It won't go into 4wd, but it will run in 2wd. He's asking $800 for it. Do you think it's worth it?

Well, are you either willing to leave it in 2wd forever, or do a tcase swap/repair? If so, then yes, I would say that is a good deal.

I'd try to fix the tcase problem first. See if there was a linkage problem and swap out the case if necessary. I can get a decent tcase around here for around $200.

Pick it up, offer $600 & go up to $700 if necessary. Cheap trail rig if nothing else. Even if you dump $200.00 in it any 4x4 is worth anywhere between $1,000 to $2,000 if it runs.
Turn around sell it and you've got extra cash for a better XJ or parts for another...

Too late. He just sold it for $600. Couldn't get there fast enough.
