Just how rare is a 5 speed 4.0 XJ, and am I getting a fair deal?

That's a good deal to me. I spent way too much on mine because the seller knew what he had... a lower mile rust free 5sp 4wd 4dr. Two years later and I regret nothing.
The clutches on these things are tough! Even at 200k, it should be fine unless the previous owners couldn't drive. I would check the code and if it's for the O2 sensor, just replace it. No big deal.
If you start to mod it though with bigger tires, you'll curse yourself for getting a stick as previously stated, 3.07s suck.
Oh, remember this. Redline MT90.

That's why I swapped in a set of axles from an automatic to get 3.55 ratio for my 31's. I love the combination.

I did not know sticks came with 3.07's that kinda sucks. But there are plenty of XJ's in the junkyard so finding those lower geared axles won't be an issue. Is 1st gear wicked low in a ax-15? I could let the clutch out slowly and idle down the road in that thing.

You should be able to. The trouble starts when you have big tires and it won't do that anymore, especially in the woods. I know someone with 33s and 3.55s behind an ax-15 and it's sweet, way better than 3.07s.

Sticks only came with 3.07s if they were a 4.0L.
If they had the 2.5L, then it will have 4.10 gears.
As far as them being rare or not... I suppose everyone has a completely different definition of rare. I've only seen 3 stick shifts in person all of my life while every other XJ out there (and I've seen hundreds of them) are automatic. A factor of this is I live in Florida, where stick shifts are not as demanded as those by people driving in snowy conditions.

One thing I forgot. when you pull up on the e brake there is no resistance, it just rachets. Is this an adjustment I can make or does it need new cables/shoes?
