Deal or no deal
Hey I'm looking for an XJ to wrench in as a toy and came across a 2000 with 165k. It was in a front end collision and deployed the airbags. Besides the airbags, it's all been fixed and driven for a year leading up til now. Drives straight. Has a few other blemishes, of course, but also had a couple sagging doors. Owner wants $2000. Should I take the risk?

Been in a wreck. Strike one.
Relatively high miles, on a 00 with known head issues. Strike two.
Sagging doors. Strike 3.

To me if its been wrecked hard enough to blow the air bags i wouldn't own it.Most body shops that do insurance repairs do it as fast and cheaply as they can.Or if it was totaled then sold at a auction and a private person fixed it scares me more. The doors sagging to me screams a fast cheapo repair and i would be scared to see how they really repaired things. The other thing is its a 00-01 those two years jeep put on a head that can crack,Went to a low pinion dana 30 in the front. And the exhaust changed with the 2 pre cats in the y pipe off the header. And if you want a header for that its pricey and not that many options.Honestly i would look for 91-99 as clean and virgin as i can find and afford.

like the other guys said if it was in a wreck i would not buy it. Especially for $2000. if you are really looking for some thing to wrench on and are not going to be driving it on the roads, then find out what the scrap value for steel in your area is and offer him that. It should be right around $300. if he takes that then bring it home and strip it down as far as you can get it and sell the parts that are still good, and scrap the body and make back your money probably 2 times over. Or if it is only going to be a toy sell what you can off of it and build it to suet your needs.

Scrap value? Locally, that would be $100. I highly doubt the seller would even acknowledge the offer, or they might just punch you. If you offered $1k & he took it I'd be surprised.
I'd pass but how does the XJs price compare to the others in your area?

Fools out here in CO want like $5k for anything with less than 150k miles. Under 100k, $7k-$8k.

I bought my 90 for $500 and drove it home. 45k on a rebuilt motor. 235k on the Jeep. Suspension and brakes were worn out, I planned to upgrade anyways. Interior and paint in decent shape considering the age. Just to give you an idea on values.
I would pass on that one at that price. $1k would be a good price for me if it is clean inside and out.
